Measurement of sustainability in beef cattle: challenges for responsible consumption and production of the 2030 Agenda

Resumo: | The production systems of beef cattle are facing complex global challenges. One of them refers to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals, which encourages systems to adapt to sustainable production standards proposed by science, consumers and other stakeholders. In this context, the objective of this article is to identify in the literature a set of indicators that contribute to achieving sustainability in the beef cattle production system. To achieve this proposal, it was decided to carry out an integrative literature review. The results showed the existence of performance indicators, indicators related to animals, as well as other structural and economic ones. However, no indicators were identified aimed at contributing to the achievement of sustainability of specific production systems of beef cattle. The relevance of this study is due to the recognition of a methodological gap, which represents a relevant measure to face the increasing challenges identified in global production systems. This information provides strategies that support the progress of relevant assessments and analyzes to address issues involved in the development of more sustainable day-to-day practices and more effective public policies. In addition, it contributes to meeting the dimensions of sustainability, within the scope of food production from animal protein. |

Uno de ellos se refiere al cumplimiento de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible, que incentiva la adaptación de los sistemas a los estándares de producción sostenible propuestos por la ciencia, los consumidores y otros actores. En este contexto, el objetivo de este artículo es identificar en la literatura un conjunto de indicadores que contribuyan a lograr la sustentabilidad en el sistema de producción bovino de carne. Para lograr esta propuesta, se decidió realizar una revisión integrativa de la literatura. Los resultados mostraron la existencia de indicadores de desempeño, indicadores relacionados con los animales, así como otros estructurales y económicos. Sin embargo, no se identificaron indicadores destinados a contribuir al logro de la sostenibilidad de sistemas específicos de producción de ganado vacuno de carne. La relevancia de este estudio se debe al reconocimiento de un vacío metodológico, que representa una medida relevante para enfrentar los crecientes desafíos identificados en los sistemas productivos globales. Esta información proporciona estrategias que respaldan el progreso de evaluaciones y análisis relevantes para abordar los problemas involucrados en el desarrollo de prácticas cotidianas más sostenibles y políticas públicas más efectivas. Además, contribuye a cumplir con las dimensiones de la sustentabilidad, en el ámbito de la producción de alimentos a partir de proteína animal.Os sistemas produtivos da bovinocultura de corte estão diante de complexos desafios globais. Um deles refere-se ao atendimento dos Objetivos do Desenvolvimento Sustentável, que incentiva os sistemas a se adaptarem aos padrões produtivos sustentáveis propostos pela ciência, pelos consumidores e demais partes interessadas. Neste contexto, o objetivo deste artigo é identificar na literatura um conjunto de indicadores que contribuam para o alcance da sustentabilidade no sistema produtivo da bovinocultura de corte. Para atingir tal proposta, optou-se pela realização de uma revisão integrativa da literatura. Os resultados mostraram a existência de indicadores de desempenho, indicadores relacionados aos animais, bem como outros estruturais e econômicos. Contudo, não foram identificados indicadores voltados para contribuir no alcance da sustentabilidade dos sistemas produtivos específicos da bovinocultura de corte. A relevância deste estudo se dá pelo reconhecimento de uma lacuna metodológica, que representa uma medida pertinente para enfrentar os desafios cada vez maiores identificados nos sistemas produtivos globais. Essas informações fornecem estratégias que auxiliam o progresso de avaliações e análises pertinentes para arear questões envoltas no desenvolvimento de práticas cotidianas mais sustentáveis e de políticas públicas mais eficazes.
