From the discovery of diagnosis to antiretroviral treatment: phenomenological study with young people living with HIV

Resumo: The objective was to understand the youth's experience in HIV diagnosis and their expectations with antiretroviral treatment. Qualitative research, with a phenomenological approach, based on Martin Heidegger's theoretical-philosophical-methodological referential. Data production took place through phenomenological interviews with ten participants aged between 16 and 23 years in a specialized service located in a university hospital in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The units of meaning were: discovering the HIV diagnosis means a shock, but you have to understand and live life; and treatment with antiretrovirals means expecting to continue living and planning the future. The young person's experience in discovering HIV revealed the fact of having a diagnosis that they cannot change and to accept it they need time and support. The expectation with antiretroviral treatment revealed the occupation with self care routine makes it possible to live, be healthy, plan the future and carry out the plans. Understanding the meaning of ARV treatment for youth helps guide care, and it is important to rethink the daily care behavior provided to this population.

El objetivo fue comprender la experiencia de jóvenes en el descubrimiento del VIH y sus expectativas con el tratamiento antirretroviral. Investigación cualitativa, con un enfoque fenomenológico, basado en el marco teórico-filosófico-metodológico de Martin Heidegger. La producción de datos se realizó a través de entrevistas fenomenológicas con diez participantes de entre 16 y 23 años, en un servicio especializado ubicado en un hospital universitario en Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Las unidades de significado fueron: descubrir el diagnóstico de VIH significa un shock, pero hay que entender y vivir la vida; y el tratamiento con antirretrovirales significa esperar seguir viviendo y planificar para el futuro. La experiencia del joven en descubrir el VIH reveló el hecho de que tenían un diagnóstico que no se puede cambiar y que, para aceptarlo, se necesita tiempo y apoyo. La expectativa con el tratamiento antirretroviral reveló la ocupación con la rutina de atención que hace posible vivir, estar saludable, planificar su futuro y llevar a cabo sus planes. Comprender el significado del tratamiento ARV para los jóvenes ayuda a guiar la atención, y es importante repensar la conducta diaria de atención brindada a esta población.O objetivo foi compreender o vivido por jovens na descoberta do HIV e sua expectativa com o tratamento antirretroviral. Investigação qualitativa, com abordagem fenomenológica, fundamentada no referencial teórico-filosófico-metodológico de Martin Heidegger. A produção de dados ocorreu por meio da entrevista fenomenológica com dez participantes de idade entre 16 e 23 anos, em serviço especializado localizado em um hospital universitário no Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. As unidades de significado foram: descobrir o diagnóstico do HIV significa um choque, mas tem que entender e viver a vida; e o tratamento com antirretrovirais significa ter expectativa de continuar a viver e planejar o futuro. O vivido do jovem na descoberta do HIV desvelou a facticidade de ter um diagnóstico que não se pode mudar e que, para aceitá-lo, precisa-se de tempo e apoio. A expectativa com o tratamento antirretroviral desvelou a ocupação com a rotina de cuidados que possibilita viver, ter saúde, planejar seu futuro e realizar seus planos.
