The impacts of social isolation about changes of eating behavior and weight gain during the COVID-19 pandemic in Belo Horizonte and metropolitan region, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil

Resumo: | This article aims to evaluate the feelings involved with social isolation and its relationship with changes in eating habits and weight gain during the COVID-19 pandemic in Belo Horizonte and the metropolitan region. The methodology used was exploratory research of a quantitative nature. The questionnaire applied in June 2020 was prepared on Google Forms and obtained a sample of 700 respondents. The data were tabulated in Excel and analyzed in RStudio. The absolute and relative frequencies of the following variables were used: feelings perceived during social isolation, influence of isolation on people's physical and mental health and change in eating habits. Subsequently, these data were used to cross-correlate these issues with weight variation. Of the 700 respondents, 83% were in social isolation during some time of the pandemic, and of these, 54% gained weight. Among the feelings involved with the pandemic, the highlights were anxiety, fear of relatives and friends becoming ill, uncertainty about the future and concern. Regarding the quality of food, 44% (p <0.0001) said they had worsened the quality of food consumption and 55% (p <0.0001) said they were eating more frequently. It was found that there was an increase in the consumption of sweets, soft drinks, alcohol, pasta and bakery items (p <0.0001). |

La metodología utilizada fue una investigación exploratoria de carácter cuantitativo. El cuestionario aplicado en junio de 2020 fue elaborado en Google Forms y obtuvo una muestra de 700 encuestados. Los datos se tabularon en Excel y se analizaron en RStudio. Se utilizaron las frecuencias absolutas y relativas de las siguientes variables: sentimientos percibidos durante el aislamiento social, influencia del aislamiento en la salud física y mental de las personas y cambio en los hábitos alimentarios. Posteriormente, estos datos se utilizaron para correlacionar estos problemas con la variación de peso. De los 700 encuestados, el 83% se encontraba en aislamiento social durante algún tiempo de la pandemia, y de estos, el 54% aumentó de peso. Entre los sentimientos relacionados con la pandemia, se destacaron la ansiedad, el miedo a que familiares y amigos se enfermen, la incertidumbre sobre el futuro y la preocupación. En cuanto a la calidad de los alimentos, el 44% (p <0,0001) dijo haber empeorado la calidad del consumo de alimentos y el 55% (p <0,0001) dijo que comía con más frecuencia. Se encontró que hubo un aumento en el consumo de dulces, refrescos, alcohol, pastas y productos de panadería (p <0,0001).O presente artigo tem como objetivo avaliar os sentimentos envolvidos com o isolamento social e sua relação com as alterações dos hábitos alimentares e o ganho de peso durante a pandemia do COVID-19 em Belo Horizonte e região metropolitana. A metodologia utilizada foi pesquisa exploratória de natureza quantitativa. O questionário aplicado em junho de 2020 foi elaborado no Google Formulários e obteve uma amostra de 700 respondentes. Dentre os sentimentos envolvidos com a pandemia, os destaques foram ansiedade, medo de parentes e amigos adoecerem, incerteza quanto ao futuro e preocupação. Sobre a qualidade da alimentação, 44% (p < 0.0001) disseram ter piorado a qualidade do consumo alimentar e 55% (p < 0.0001) afirmam estarem comendo com maior frequência.
