Fisher-Shannon analysis of the São Francisco river flow: the influence of dams and reservoirs

Resumo: We investigated how the construction of the Sobradinho and Xingó dams affected the daily streamflow of the São Francisco River, using Fisher - Shannon analysis. The daily streamflow time series of the fluviometric stations Juazeiro / BA and Pão de Açúcar / AL that are located downstream of the Sobradinho and Xingó reservoirs were analyzed for the periods prior to the construction of both reservoirs, after the construction of Sobradinho and before the construction of Xingó, and after the construction of both reservoirs. We applied Fisher-Shannon analysis to streamflow subseries and in moving windows, evaluating differences using the Kruskal-Wallis test. This method simultaneously quantifies the local and global properties of the probability density function of the analyzed signal. We observed that in the natural regime the degree of temporal organization of the streamflow series decreased with an increase in the drainage area. After the construction of Sobradinho the degree of regularity of the streamflow dynamics decreased comparing to the natural regime and after the construction of Xingó we observed a more regular and more organized streamflow dynamics. Thus, the operations of the reservoirs changed the degree of regularity and temporal organization of the streamflow series, as indicated by the entropy and Fisher information values, respectively.

Se analizaron las series temporales de caudal diario de las estaciones fluviométricas Juazeiro / BA y Pan de Azucar / AL que se ubican aguas abajo de los embalses de Sobradinho y Xingó para los períodos anteriores a la construcción de ambos embalses, luego de la construcción de Sobradinho y antes de la construcción de Xingó, y después de la construcción de ambos embalses. Aplicamos el análisis de Fisher-Shannon a sub series de caudal y en ventanas móviles, evaluando las diferencias mediante la prueba de Kruskal-Wallis. Este método cuantifica simultáneamente las propiedades locales y globales de la función de densidad de probabilidad de la señal analizada. Observamos que en el régimen natural el grado de organización temporal de la serie de caudales disminuyó con el aumento del área de drenaje. Posteriormente a la construcción de Sobradinho el grado de regularidad de la dinámica del caudal fluvial disminuyó en comparación con el régimen natural, luego de la construcción del Xingó observamos una dinámica fluvial más regular y organizada. Así, las operaciones de los embalses cambiaron el grado de regularidad y organización temporal de la serie de caudales, como lo indican los valores de entropía y de información de Fisher, respectivamente.Investigamos como a construção das barragens de Sobradinho e Xingó afetaram a vazão diária do rio São Francisco, usando a análise de Fisher – Shannon. Foram analisadas as séries temporais de vazão diária das estações fluviométricas de Juazeiro/BA e Pão de Açúcar/AL, que estão a jusante dos reservatórios de Sobradinho e Xingó nos períodos anterior a construção de ambos os reservatórios, depois da construção de Sobradinho e após a construção de Xingó e após a construção de ambos os reservatórios. Aplicamos a análise de Fisher-Shannon nas amostras, e em janelas móveis avaliando as diferenças por meio do teste de Kruskal-Wallis. Este método quantifica simultaneamente as propriedades locais e globais da função de densidade de probabilidade do sinal analisado. Observamos que no regime natural, o grau de organização temporal das séries de vazão diminuiu com aumento de área de drenagem. Após a construção de Sobradinho o grau de regularidade da dinâmica da vazão diminuiu em relação ao regime natural, e após a construção de Xingó observamos uma dinâmica de vazão mais regular e mais organizada.
