Coffee consumption: a risk factor for the development of peptic ulcer?

Resumo: Objective: To analyze from the literature the relationship of coffee consumption as a risk factor for the development of peptic ulcers. Method: This article is an integrative review carried out in the Web of Science and PubMed databases, and the Journal Portal of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) of the Ministry of Education of Brazil (MEC), with 8 articles published between 2000 and 2020 being selected according to criteria of inclusion and exclusion. Results: Cross-sectional studies (50%) prevailed, followed by prospective cohort studies (25%) and finally by a longitudinal study (12.5%) and a systematic review (12.5%), with each original article written around research in a different country. Conclusion: From the data obtained in the selected articles, it is suggested that coffee consumption is not, after all, a risk factor for the development of peptic ulcers, but the need for more research directed at this theme becomes evident.

Método: Este artículo es una revisión integradora realizada em las bases de datos de Web of Science y PubMed, y el Portal de Revistas de la Coordinación para el Mejoramiento del Personal de Educación Superior (CAPES) del Ministerio de Educación de Brasil (MEC), seleccionando 8 artículos publicados entre 2000 y 2020 que obedecen a criterios de inclusión y exclusión. Resultados: prevalecieron los estudios transversales (50%), seguidos de estudios de cohorte prospectivos (25%) y finalmente um estudio longitudinal (12.5%) y una revisión sistemática (12.5%), con cada artículo original escrito alrededor de uma investigación en un país diferente. Conclusión: A partir de los datos obtenidos en los artículos seleccionados, se sugiere que el consumo de café no es, después de todo, um factor de riesgo para el desarrollo de úlceras pépticas, pero la necesidad de más investigación dirigida a este tema se hace evidente.Objetivo: Analisar a partir da literatura a relação do consumo de café como um fator de risco para desenvolvimento de úlceras pépticas. Método: O presente artigo é uma revisão integrativa realizada nas bases de dados Web of Science e PubMed, e o Portal de Periódicos da Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) do Ministério da Educação do Brasil (MEC), sendo selecionados 8 artigos publicados entre 2000 e 2020 obedecendo critérios de inclusão e exclusão. Resultados: Prevaleceram estudos transversais (50%), seguidos pelos estudos de coorte prospectivos (25%) e enfim por um estudo longitudinal (12,5%) e uma revisão sistemática (12,5%), sendo cada artigo original escrito em torno de uma pesquisa em um país diferente. Conclusão: A partir dos dados obtidos nos artigos selecionados, sugere-se que o consumo de café não seja, afinal, um fator de risco para desenvolvimento de úlceras pépticas, mas torna-se evidente a necessidade de mais pesquisas direcionadas a essa temática.
