Resumo: In Brazil the initial formation of teachers emerged after the independence of the country, during which period the organization of popular instruction was considered. From this, began to the creation of the Normal schools, with the scope to train and to train the teachers. In the state of Maranhão, the University State of Maranhão (UEMA) has strengthened teacher training, with the offer of undergraduate courses, thus showing its vocation in the graduation of teachers. Therefore, the central objective of the article was to record the contributions made by the Center for Higher Studies of Balsas (CESBA) UEMA’s campus with the training, qualification and initial qualification of teachers for the South-Maranhão society. For the accomplishment of the study, it was necessary to be guided in the bibliographical research; documentary, in the Pedagogical Projects of Courses and in the field research, with the application of questionnaires to the graduates of the degrees. The application of the questionnaires to the investigated public sought to discover the opinions regarding the aspects of the professional training in said Center. As a result, three categories of analysis were established: 1. CESBA's educational philosophy for teacher training; 2. Objectives, competencies and skills in teacher training; 3. Perceptions regarding initial teacher education. Finally, these studies have allowed us to understand part of the history of the formation of initial teacher training, to perceive factors that have been preserved, what has changed, and mainly, what needs improvement.

A partir de eso, se inició a la creación de las escuelas Normales, con el alcance de formar y capacitar a los profesores. En el estado de Maranhão, la Universidad Estatal de Maranhão (UEMA) potenció la formación docente, con la oferta de los cursos de licenciatura, mostrando así su vocación en la graduación de profesores. Por eso, el objetivo central del artículo registró las contribuciones que el Centro de Estudios Superiores de Balsas (CESBA) campus de la UEMA proporcionó con la formación, capacitación y cualificación inicial de profesores, para la sociedad sur-maranhense. Para la realización del estudio, fue preciso guiarse en la investigación bibliográfica; documental, en los Proyectos Pedagógicos de Cursos y en la investigación de campo, con la aplicación de cuestionarios a los egresados de las licenciaturas. La aplicación de los cuestionarios al público investigado buscó descubrir las opiniones en relación a los aspectos de la formación profesional en dicho Centro. Como resultado, se establecieron tres categorías de análisis: 1. Filosofía educativa del CESBA para la formación de profesores, 2. Los objetivos, las competencias y las habilidades en la formación docente, 3. Percepciones acerca de la formación inicial de los profesores. Por último, estos estudios nos proporcionaron entender parte de la historia de la formación de la formación inicial de profesores, percibir factores que fueron preservados, lo que cambió, y principalmente, lo que necesita de mejoras.No Brasil a formação inicial de professores emergiu após a independência do país, período em que se cogitou a organização da instrução popular. A partir disso, iniciou-se à criação das escolas Normais, com o escopo de formar e capacitar os professores. No Estado do Maranhão, a Universidade Estadual do Maranhão (UEMA) potencializou a formação docente, com a oferta dos cursos de licenciatura, mostrando assim sua vocação na graduação de professores. Diante disso, o objetivo central do artigo registrou as contribuições que o Centro de Estudos Superiores de Balsas (CESBA) campus da UEMA proporcionou com a formação, capacitação e qualificação inicial de professores, para a sociedade Sul-maranhense. Para a realização do estudo, foi preciso pautar-se na pesquisa bibliográfica; documental, nos Projetos Pedagógicos de Cursos e na pesquisa de campo, com a aplicação de questionários aos egressos das licenciaturas. A aplicação dos questionários ao público investigado buscou descobrir as opiniões em relação aos aspectos da formação profissional no referido Centro. Como resultado, estabeleceram-se três categorias de análise: 1. Filosofia educativa do CESBA para a formação de professores, 2. Os objetivos, as competências e as habilidades na formação docente, 3.
