Socio-economic characterization of the cassava production system for family farmers in the Municipality of São Francisco do Pará

Resumo: Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is a crop of great economic, social and cultural importance, a source of work and income for family farmers. Pará is the largest producer of cassava, however, for the productive potential of the species, production in the state is low, which may be associated with low technological levels, less integration and actions of institutions and technical assistance offered to small farmers. Knowledge about the particularities, difficulties experienced by producers in municipalities that have the production of culture as an economic base, is seen as an essential point for achieving regional rural development. The objective was to develop the characterization of the potentials and limitations of the cassava production system in the city of São Francisco do Pará, a microregion in the northeast of Pará, through field research with an exploratory perspective and a quanti-quantitative approach, using the technique “snowball sampling” and use of questionnaires. It was found that the production of cassava is the main source of income and subsistence, with a predominance of low technological level, such as felling and burning. A lack of technical assistance from government agencies was identified. The main problems during the production process were the infrastructure of the “flour houses” and the transport factor during the commercial stage of the flour. There is a demand for greater public action, offering public policies, technical assistance, articulations that enable the entry of producers into markets, and thus the achievement of better financial results, moving towards greater local and regional development.

Pará es el mayor productor de yuca, sin embargo, por el potencial productivo de la especie, la producción en el estado es baja, lo que puede estar asociado a bajos niveles tecnológicos, menor integración y acciones de las instituciones y asistencia técnica ofrecida a los pequeños agricultores. El conocimiento de las particularidades, dificultades que experimentan los productores en los municipios que tienen la producción de cultura como base económica, es visto como un punto fundamental para lograr el desarrollo rural regional. El objetivo fue desarrollar la caracterización de las potencialidades y limitaciones del sistema de producción de yuca en la ciudad de São Francisco do Pará, una microrregión en el noreste de Pará, a través de una investigación de campo con una perspectiva exploratoria y un enfoque cuantitativo, utilizando el técnica de “muestreo de bola de nieve” y uso de cuestionarios. Se encontró que la producción de yuca es la principal fuente de ingresos y subsistencia, con predominio de bajo nivel tecnológico, como la tala y la quema. Se identificó una falta de asistencia técnica de las agencias gubernamentales. Los principales problemas durante el proceso de producción fueron la infraestructura de las “harineras” y el factor de transporte durante la etapa comercial de la harina. Existe una demanda de mayor acción pública, ofreciendo políticas públicas, asistencia técnica, articulaciones que permitan el ingreso de los productores a los mercados, y así el logro de mejores resultados financieros, avanzando hacia un mayor desarrollo local y regional.A mandioca (Manihot esculenta Crantz) é uma cultura de grande importância econômica, social e cultural, fonte de trabalho e renda para agricultores familiares. O Pará é o maior produtor de mandioca, no entanto, para o potencial produtivo da espécie, a produção no estado é baixa, o que pode estar associada aos baixos níveis tecnológicos, a menor integração e ações de instituições e assistência técnica oferecida aos pequenos agricultores. O conhecimento quanto às particularidades, dificuldades vivenciadas pelos produtores dos municípios que detenham a produção da cultura como base econômica é visto como ponto essencial, para o alcance do desenvolvimento rural regional. Objetivou-se desenvolver a caracterização das potencialidades e limitações do sistema de produção de mandioca no município de São Francisco do Pará, microrregião do nordeste do paraense, mediante pesquisa de campo com perspectiva exploratória e abordagem de cunho quanti-quantitativo, utilizando-se a técnica “snowball sampling” (amostragem bola de neve) e emprego de questionários. Constatou-se que a produção de mandioca é a principal fonte de renda e subsistência, com predominância de baixo nível tecnológico, como a atividade de derruba e queima. Identificou-se ausência de assistência técnica por parte de órgãos governamentais. Evidenciou-se como principais problemas no decorrer do processo produtivo a infraestrutura das “casas de farinha” e o fator transporte durante a etapa comercial da farinha.
