Dentistry and pregnancy: the importance of dental prenatal care: a literature review

Health begins with the mouth, and pregnancy is a period of physiological changes in the woman's body, including the oral cavity, which justifies the importance of the dental surgeon during pregnancy. The objective of this study was to discuss the importance of dental prenatal care as a health promotion strategy, the knowledge of the main oral alterations during pregnancy, and the multidisciplinary follow-up. Method: This study was conducted from bibliographic searches in the Scielo and Google Scholar databases using complete articles in Portuguese, published in the years 2010 to 2022. Discussion: This article consists of a literature review that addresses the relationship between dentistry and pregnancy, both in aspects related to the oral health of the pregnant woman and the baby, as well as in relation to the importance of dental care during pregnancy. Conclusion: Dental prenatal care is important to prevent oral and systemic pathologies, in addition to guiding the future mother on oral hygiene, maternal oral health directly influences their own health as a whole, but also the health of the baby.
