Implementation and impacts of a safe surgery protocol adapted for safe examination in a private gastroenterology clinic

Introduction: Safety in the provision of care is a premise aligned with the Patient Safety Program. Among the established goals, safe surgery is a constant topic of study in the hospital setting. However, in the same way, outpatient clinics, whether public or private, also need to adapt the safe surgery components to the profile of their institution. This study aims to describe the experience of implementing a safe surgery protocol adapted for performing tests in a private gastroenterology clinic in western Paraná. Method: a descriptive, qualitative study of the experience report type elaborated from the perspective of the team of a private outpatient clinic specialized in gastroenterology and diagnosis of diseases of the Digestive System, located in the city of Cascavel, western region of Paraná. The adapted protocol for safe exams was implemented in 2017 at the clinic. Results: Three safety barriers were implemented, which then led to the established protocol (scheduling protocol, anesthesia protocol, and, finally, the Checklist protocol for safe examination). In addition to some indicators presented that show an overview of this implementation, for example, cancellations of exams. Adherence to the protocol, especially for the anesthetic protocol, was a weakness initially identified. Final Considerations: benefits were perceived, as possible adverse events could be barred through the application of the adapted protocol for the safe examination. Thus, any protocols to be instituted demand constant reassessments and continuous improvement strategies. Hence the preponderant role of the nurse with regard to patient safety.
