Resumo: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is one of the degenerative joint diseases that causes pain, functional impairment and quality of life that is associated with a significant economic impact. Ozone therapy (OT) has been suggested in clinical practice as a promising therapy and adjunct to clinical rehabilitation due to favorable results in the treatment of joint diseases such as KOA. Thus, the purpose of this study is to present, through a narrative review, an understanding of the current evidence available on the clinical importance of including OT in the treatment of KOA. The bibliographic databases of PubMed/MEDLINE, Virtual Health Library (VHL), Web of Science and SciELO were used. Based on peer-reviewed studies, the studies analyzed demonstrate that OT exerts positive effects in reducing the level of pain, improving functionality and quality of life in patients with KOA due to its ability to modulate the joint inflammatory process and act on pathways. endogenous inhibition of pain control. Furthermore, the authors support that OT therapy may be particularly important for patients experiencing adverse drug therapy effects and/or who are not candidates for surgery. Thus, OT can be suggested as an adjuvant method for rehabilitation and effective in the treatment of chronic degenerative inflammatory joint diseases, as it is a minimally invasive method and has relatively low costs. However, it is necessary to carry out controlled and randomized clinical studies in order to elucidate ideal treatment protocols to be used safely in clinical practice.

La ozonoterapia (OT) se ha sugerido en la práctica clínica como una terapia prometedora y un complemento de la rehabilitación clínica debido a los resultados favorables en el tratamiento de enfermedades articulares como la KOA. Por lo tanto, el propósito de este estudio es presentar, a través de una revisión narrativa, una comprensión de la evidencia actual disponible sobre la importancia clínica de incluir TO en el tratamiento de KOA. Se utilizaron las bases de datos bibliográficas de PubMed/MEDLINE, Biblioteca Virtual en Salud (BVS), Web of Science y SciELO. Con base en los estudios revisados por pares, los estudios analizados demuestran que la TO tiene efectos positivos en la reducción del nivel de dolor, mejorando la funcionalidad y la calidad de vida en pacientes con KOA debido a su capacidad para modular el proceso inflamatorio articular y actuar sobre las vías endógenas. inhibición del control del dolor. A ozonioterapia (OT) tem sido sugerida na prática clínica como uma terapia promissora e adjuvante à reabilitação clínica devido aos resultados favoráveis no tratamento de doenças articulares, como a OAJ. Assim, o propósito deste estudo é apresentar, por meio de uma revisão narrativa, uma compreensão das evidências atuais disponíveis sobre a importância clínica da inclusão da OT no tratamento da OAJ. As bases de dados bibliográficas do PubMed/MEDLINE, Biblioteca virtual da saúde (BVS), Web of Science e SciELO foram utilizadas. Com base nos estudos revisados por pares, os estudos analisados demonstram que a OT exerce efeitos positivos na redução do nível de dor, melhoram a funcionalidade e a qualidade de vida de pacientes com OAJ devido sua capacidade de modular o processo inflamatório articular e atuar vias de inibição endógena do controle da dor. Ademais, os autores apoiam que a OT terapia pode ser particularmente importante para pacientes sofrem efeitos adversos à terapia medicamentosa e/ou que não são candidatos à cirurgia. Assim, pode-se sugerir a OT como um método adjuvante à reabilitação e eficaz no tratamento de doenças inflamatórias crônico degenerativas articulares visto que é um método minimamente invasivo e apresenta custos relativamente baixos.
