Resumo: The environmental management of waste in Federal Higher Education Institutions (IFES) is highly complex, in IFES the volume of waste generated is small, but with great diversity, which makes its treatment difficult. Specifically, waste generated in institutes requires reliable management methods. Activities with chemical, biological or infectious products have risks. The research is a case study at the Institute of Biological Sciences of the Federal University of Pará (ICB/UFPA), descriptive, empirical, using questionnaires applied to teaching staff and administrative technicians in education, with the aim of analyzing how these residues are managed. The results obtained showed that there is a lack of attention, lack of knowledge of legal standards, and deficiencies in information regarding the waste generated. It is concluded in this research that the ICB/UFPA lacks an Action Plan for the management of waste from laboratory services, the development of environmental education as an action tool, establishing target programs and activities for waste management and environment, defining a deadline for compliance, thus enabling greater security in the administration and management of its laboratories.

En concreto, los residuos generados en los institutos requieren métodos de gestión fiables. Las actividades con productos químicos, biológicos os infecciosos tienen riesgos. La investigación es un estudio de caso en el Instituto de Ciencias Biológicas de la Universidad Federal de Pará (ICB/UFPA), descriptiva, empírica, utilizando cuestionarios aplicados a docentes y técnicos administrativos en educación, con el objetivo de analizar cómo se gestionan esos residuos. Los resultados obtenidos evidenciaron que existe falta de atención, desconocimiento de las normas legales y deficiencias en la información respecto de los residuos generados. Se concluye en esta investigación que el ICB/UFPA carece de un Plan de Acción para la gestión de residuos de servicios de laboratorio, el desarrollo de la educación ambiental como herramienta de acción, estableciendo programas y actividades objetivo para la gestión de residuos y medio ambiente, definiendo un plazo para su cumplimiento, permitiendo así una mayor seguridad en la administración y gestión de sus laboratorios.O gerenciamento ambiental de resíduos em Instituições Federais de Ensino Superior (IFES) é altamente complexo, nas IFES o volume de resíduos gerados é pequeno, mas com grande diversidade, o que dificulta o seu tratamento. Especificamente os resíduos gerados nos institutos necessitam de métodos confiáveis de manejo. As atividades com produtos químicos, biológicos ou infectocontagiosos, têm riscos. A pesquisa é um estudo de caso no Instituto de Ciências Biológicas da Universidade Federal do Pará (ICB/UFPA), descritiva, empírica, utilizou-se de questionários aplicados aos servidores docentes e técnicos administrativos em educação, com o objetivo de analisar como esses resíduos são gerenciados. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que existe uma falta de atenção, desconhecimento das normas legais, deficiências de informações para os resíduos gerados.
