Resumo: Conventional water and wastewater treatment processes, when they exist, are not efficient for drug removal and residues of various types of antimicrobials have been found in surface and wastewater. The presence of these substances in the aquatic environment is a serious concern worldwide, as it can lead to the emergence of resistance to antibiotics, reducing or even preventing their therapeutic effect. This study investigated the occurrence of representatives of two groups of antibiotics (fluoroquinolones and sulfonamides) in sewage treatment plant (STP) effluents and in surface waters receiving effluent discharge. The results indicated that the concentrations of the three analytes identified in the effluents - ciprofloxacin (CIP), norfloxacin (NOR) and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) - ranged from <100 (ng/mL) to >100 ng/mL and the antimicrobials CIP and SMZ occurred more frequently and at higher concentrations. Therefore, studies on the occurrence of drugs in the environment should be expanded, their effects should be investigated, and treatment systems should be improved and made more efficient to minimize these contaminants.

Research, Society and Development2021-08-15info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/article/view/1900010.33448/rsd-v10i10.19000Research, Society and Development; Vol. 10 No. 10; e415101019000Research, Society and Development; Vol. 10 Núm. 10; e415101019000Research, Society and Development; v. 10 n. 10; e4151010190002525-3409reponame:Research, Society and Developmentinstname:Universidade Federal de Itajubá (UNIFEI)instacron:UNIFEIporhttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/article/view/19000/16991Copyright (c) 2021 Neusa Maria Castelo Branco; Mararlene Ulberg Pereira ; Rosana Gomes Ferreira; Bernardete Ferraz Spisso; André Luís Mazzei Albert; Célia Maria Carvalho Pereira Araujo Romãohttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessBranco, Neusa Maria Castelo Pereira , Mararlene UlbergFerreira, Rosana GomesSpisso, Bernardete Ferraz Albert, André Luís MazzeiRomão, Célia Maria Carvalho Pereira Araujo2021-10-02T21:49:16Zoai:ojs.pkp.sfu.ca:article/19000Revistahttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/indexPUBhttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/oairsd.articles@gmail.com2525-34092525-3409opendoar:2024-01-17T09:38:59.902495Research, Society and Development - Universidade Federal de Itajubá (UNIFEI)false
