Resumo: Objective: to understand the factors that influence the provision of food to children aged zero to five years from the perspective of mothers. Method: a descriptive and exploratory study was carried out, with a qualitative approach, involving 16 mothers. The data resulting from the interviews were organized using the Atlas ti software and submitted to content analysis. Results: Among the mothers in the study, 62.5% received information in prenatal care about the importance of breastfeeding; 56.2% said they had not participated in lectures on breastfeeding and 75% responded that the child did not breastfeed in the 1st hour of life. The meanings of the messages and concepts learned were organized into three categories: Breastfeeding - its particularities and its determinants; Beginning of Complementary Food and its modalities; and The Covid-19 pandemic, as an influence on children's eating routine. Conclusion: there was a multiplicity of factors that determine the diet of children aged 0 to 5 years. Mothers express the desire to breastfeed, but this is not a fixed social role, requiring many adjustments to reality, ranging from maternal and child problems, context and legal issues, health professionals' attitude and organization of services and even more as broad as the Covid pandemic 19. As these are diverse situations and constant changes, mothers must be supported in the process of breastfeeding/feeding their children by a team of prepared professionals, which implies the need that basic health units have to be certified in the Amamenta Alimenta Brasil Strategy.
