Maternal mortality rates between 2016 and 2020: From the COVID-19 Pandemic in the Northern Region of Brazil

Resumo: In December 2019, the SARS-CoV-2 disease began in China, in 2020 it was considered a pandemic by the World Health Organization. The immune system fights infections such as COVID-19, however, during pregnancy there is an atypical behavior of immunity to maintain adequate fetal development, as pregnant women are at risk for COVID-19. The objective of the present study was to analyze maternal mortality rates in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic, in the North of Brazil. This is a cross-sectional, retrospective and analytical epidemiological study on maternal mortality between the years 2016 to 2020 and 2019 to 2020, in the context of COVID-19 in the North of Brazil, using data from the health literature and reported cases in the Notifiable Diseases Information System. In the period analyzed, there were 1,211 maternal deaths in the Region, with emphasis on the states of Pará (49%) and Amazonas (26%), despite annual variations, the occurrences between the states were little changed, the average between the years of 2016 to 2020. There was a 133% increase in indirect obstetric maternal deaths in 2020 compared to 2019. According to the study's analysis, the obstetric mortality rate increased in 2020, the initial period of the pandemic, with emphasis on for the states of Roraima and Amapá, which had the highest percentage increase, in addition, maternal deaths due to indirect supplementary causes in 2020 in relation to previous specific years, highlighted by the Pandemic.

El objetivo del estudio fue analizar las tasas de mortalidad materna en la Pandemia SARS-CoV-2, en el Norte de Brasil. Se trata de un estudio epidemiológico transversal, retrospectivo y analítico sobre la mortalidad materna entre los años 2016 a 2020 y 2019 a 2020, en el contexto de la COVID-19 en Norte de Brasil, utilizando datos de la literatura de salud y casos reportados en el Sistema de Información de Enfermedades de Declaración Obligatoria. En el período analizado, ocurrieron 1.211 muertes maternas, con énfasis en los estados de Pará (49%) y Amazonas (26%), a pesar de las variaciones anuales, las ocurrencias entre los estados variaron poco, el promedio entre los años de 2016 a 2020. Hubo un aumento del 133% en las muertes maternas indirectas en 2020 en comparación con 2019. Según el análisis del estudio, la tasa de mortalidad obstétrica aumentó en 2020, el período inicial de la pandemia, con énfasis en para los estados de Roraima y Amapá, que tuvieron el mayor aumento porcentual, además, de muertes maternas indirectas complementarias en 2020 en relación a años específicos anteriores, destacados por la Pandemia.Em dezembro de 2019, iniciou na China a doença do SARS-CoV-2, em 2020 foi considerada pandemia pela Organização Mundial da Saúde. O sistema imunológico combate infecções como a COVID-19, contudo na gestação há um comportamento atípico da imunidade para manter o adequado desenvolvimento fetal, as gestantes integram o grupo de risco da COVID-19. O objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar os índices de mortalidade materna no contexto da Pandemia por SARS-CoV-2, na Região Norte brasileira. Trata-se de um estudo epidemiológico transversal, retrospectivo e analítico, acerca da mortalidade materna entre os anos de 2016 a 2020 e 2019 a 2020, no contexto de COVID-19 na Região Norte brasileira, usou-se dados da literatura em saúde e os casos notificados no Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação. No período analisado, ocorreram 1211 óbitos maternos na Região, destacam-se os estados do Pará (49%) e Amazonas (26%), apesar das variações anuais, as proporções entre os estados pouco eram alteradas, a média entre os anos de 2016 a 2020. Observa-se um aumento de 133% de óbitos maternos indiretos no ano de 2020 em relação ao de 2019.
