Resumo: | University sports have been held in Brazil since the beginning of the 19th century and currently occurs in two formats, the official with the organization by consolidated and representative entities, and the other with autonomous organizations, organized and developed through students. This article aims to describe the institutionalization process and the subsequent development of university sports in Brazil and in Brazilian universities, highlighting its historical path and its current reality. The study is characterized as qualitative of a descriptive nature, as it sought to analyze the development of Brazilian university sports and present its current reality. As a result, we highlight that the two competition formats present the sports dispute system, using the same guiding rules of the sports modalities in common, however they differ in their intentionality. In official competitions, there is a search for national representation through the results achieved. In events organized by academics, socialization and other parallel competitions allow academics to compete in addition to sports. |

In events organized by academics, socialization and other parallel competitions allow academics to compete in addition to sports.Los deportes universitarios se llevan a cabo en Brasil desde principios del siglo XIX y actualmente se presenta en dos formatos, el oficial con la organización por entidades consolidadas y representativas, y el otro formato con organizaciones autónomas, organizadas y desarrolladas a través de los estudiantes. Este artículo tiene como objetivo describir el proceso de institucionalización y el posterior desarrollo del deporte universitario en Brasil y en las instituciones de educación superior, destacando su trayectoria histórica y su realidad actual. El estudio se caracteriza por ser de naturaleza cualitativa y descriptiva, ya que buscó analizar el desarrollo del deporte universitario brasileño y presentar su realidad actual. Como resultado, destacamos que los dos formatos de competencia presentan el sistema de disputas deportivas, usando las mismas reglas de guía de las modalidades deportivas en común, sin embargo, difieren en su intencionalidad. En las competiciones oficiales, se busca la representación nacional a través de los resultados obtenidos. En los eventos organizados por académicos, la socialización y otras competiciones paralelas permiten a los académicos competir además de los deportes.O esporte universitário é realizado no Brasil desde começo do séc. XIX e atualmente ocorre em dois formatos, o oficial com a organização por entidades consolidadas e representativas, e outro com organizações autônomas, organizadas e desenvolvidas por meio dos estudantes. O presente artigo tem como objetivo, descrever o processo de institucionalização e o posterior desenvolvimento do esporte universitário no Brasil e nas Instituições de Ensino Superior, evidenciando seu percurso histórico e sua realidade atual. O estudo caracteriza-se como qualitativo de natureza descritiva, pois buscou analisar o desenvolvimento do esporte universitário brasileiro e apresentar sua atual realidade. Como resultados, destacamos que os dois formatos de competição apresentam o sistema de disputa esportiva, utilizando-se das mesmas regras norteadoras das modalidades esportivas em comum, porém diferem-se em sua intencionalidade. Nas competições oficiais, há a busca da representação nacional por meio dos resultados conquistados.
