Development of a Baja SAE off-road vehicle gearbox output shaft flange

Resumo: The Baja SAE program was created by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in the United States with the aim of encouraging undergraduate students from schools worldwide to put into practice the academic concepts learned in order to develop the design, manufacture and assembly of an off-road vehicle to participate in the competition. Thus, the scope and main goal of this work was the development of the flange for coupling the gearbox output shaft to the driveshaft, which is an integral part of the powertrain system of this type of vehicle. Based on the project's input data, which includes the torque transmitted on the powertrain system's output shaft, and on the calculations developed after bibliographic research that was carried out, it was possible to define the minimum dimensions required for the flange. After this step, the dimensions were adjusted according to those of commercial machine elements used in the automotive market, such as CV joint and screws. Regarding the material for manufacturing the flange, it was selected the ductile cast iron ASTM A536 100-70-03 (GGG-70). For assembly the flange and CV joint, the cylindrical head Allen screw with internal hexagon and class 12.9 was selected, as it has good mechanical strength required for this type of application.

Así, el alcance y objetivo principal de este trabajo fue el desarrollo de la brida para acoplar el eje de salida de la caja de cambios al semieje, que es parte integral del sistema de tren motriz de este tipo de vehículos. Con base en los datos de entrada del proyecto, que incluyen el torque transmitido en el eje de salida del sistema de transmisión, y en los cálculos desarrollados luego de una investigación bibliográfica realizada, fue posible dimensionar las medidas mínimas necesarias para la brida. Luego de este paso, se ajustaron las dimensiones de acuerdo a las de elementos de máquinas comerciales utilizadas en el mercado automotriz, tales como junta homocinética y tornillería. En cuanto al material para la fabricación de la brida se seleccionó fundición dúctil ASTM A536 100-70-03 (GGG-70). Para el montaje de la brida y junta homocinética se seleccionó un tornillo Allen de cabeza cilíndrica con hexágono interno y clase 12.9, ya que posee buena resistencia mecánica necesaria para este tipo de aplicación.O programa Baja SAE foi criado pela Sociedade de Engenheiros Automotivos (SAE) nos Estados Unidos com o objetivo de incentivar estudantes de graduação de escolas, à nível mundial, a colocarem em prática os conceitos acadêmicos aprendidos, a fim de desenvolverem o projeto, a fabricação e montagem de um veículo fora de estrada, para participação da competição. Assim, o escopo e objetivo principal deste trabalho foi o desenvolvimento do flange para acoplamento do eixo de saída da caixa de redução ao semieixo, que é parte integrante do sistema powertrain deste tipo de veículo. Com base nos dados de entrada do projeto, que incluem o torque transmitido no eixo de saída do sistema powertrain, e nos cálculos desenvolvidos após pesquisa bibliográfica realizada, foi possível dimensionar as medidas mínimas necessárias para o flange. Após esta etapa, as dimensões foram ajustadas de acordo com as de elementos de máquinas comerciais utilizados no mercado automotivo, como junta homocinética e parafusos. Referente ao material para a fabricação do flange, foi selecionado o ferro fundido nodular ASTM A536 100-70-03 (GGG-70).
