Resumo: The environmental impacts caused by man and the advancement of the concept of environmental sustainability made it necessary to classify and quantify the performance of governments and the population with regard to sustainability. The so-called ‘sustainability indicators’ serve to analyze the degree of environmental impacts caused in different media. The ecological footprint is one of the main known sustainability indicators, as it assesses the natural resources, the consumption pattern of the populations and verifies whether these patterns are within the country's ecological capacity. The objective was to calculate the ecological footprint in two schools in the municipality of Pombal, in the state of Paraíba, one public and one private school. The ecological footprint was calculated by applying a multiple-choice questionnaire relating different themes. The Ecological Footprint of private school students was higher than that of public schools, but both exceeded the world average. It was possible to observe that the students' income is positively related to the environmental impacts caused by them. Promoting greater awareness of students from both schools is essential to reduce environmental impacts.

Los llamados "indicadores de sostenibilidad" sirven para analizar el grado de impacto ambiental causado en diferentes medios. La huella ecológica es uno de los principales indicadores de sostenibilidad conocidos, ya que evalúa los recursos naturales, el patrón de consumo de las poblaciones y verifica si estos patrones están dentro de la capacidad ecológica del país. El objetivo fue calcular la huella ecológica de dos escuelas en el municipio de Pombal, en el estado de Paraíba, una escuela pública y otra privada. La huella ecológica se calculó aplicando un cuestionario de opción múltiple que relaciona diferentes temas. La huella ecológica de los estudiantes de escuelas privadas fue mayor que la de las escuelas públicas, pero ambas excedieron el promedio mundial. Fue posible observar que los ingresos de los estudiantes están positivamente relacionados con los impactos ambientales causados ​​por ellos. Promover una mayor conciencia de los estudiantes de ambas escuelas es esencial para reducir los impactos ambientales.Os impactos ambientais causados pelo homem e o avanço do conceito de sustentabilidade ambiental tornou necessário a classificação e a quantificação do desempenho de governos e da população no tocante à sustentabilidade.  Os chamados ‘indicadores de sustentabilidade’ servem para analisar o grau dos impactos ambientais causados em diversos meios. A pegada ecológica é um dos principais indicadores de sustentabilidade conhecidos, pois avalia os recursos naturais, o padrão de consumo das populações e verifica se esses padrões estão dentro da capacidade ecológica do país. O objetivo foi realizar o cálculo da pegada ecológica de duas escolas do município de Pombal, no estado da Paraíba, sendo uma escola pública e outra privada. A pegada ecológica foi calculada por meio da aplicação de um questionário de múltipla escolha relacionando diferentes temas. A Pegada Ecológica dos estudantes da escola privada foi superior aos da escola pública, mas ambas superaram a média mundial. Foi possível observar que a renda dos estudantes é positivamente relacionada aos impactos ambientais por eles causados.
