Decision-making process in books publishing: Viewpoints under the perspective of Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) teachers

Resumo: This study aims to understand and identify how the decision process by a publisher for the publication of scientific, technical and professional books (CTPs) adopted by UFSM professors. Due to the particularities, this research was based on Zeithaml and Bitner and Blackwell et al., as well as papers focusing on the decision-making process of Prado and Barcellos. This work can be classified as a descriptive exploratory research, with a qualitative approach, carried out through semistructured interviews and examined through the content analysis technique. The subjects of the research were formed by the professors linked to the Federal University of Santa Maria, who have published at least one book as author or organizer of the work. Among the results obtained, it begins with the characterization of the 20 participating authors' personal and professional profiles, besides its publications; followed by the identification and systematization of the decision process adopted by UFSM teachers in choosing a publisher, through the search for information, evaluation of alternatives, consumption of services and post-consumer evaluation. Also, the decision strategies used  by the participants to choose a publisher company were identified, evidencing, among other aspects, the low loyalty factor for decision in book publishing and that the choice based mainly on attributes, having a dependency  relation of  with the intention of the author with its book. Finally, improvements are proposed in the management practices of UFSM's Publishing Company (Editora UFSM) that acts in accordance with the demands of the authors, verified from the identified criteria.

Debido a particularidades, esta investigación se basó en Zeithaml y Bitner y Blackwell et al., así como en trabajos centrados en el proceso de toma de decisiones de Prado y Barcellos. Este trabajo puede clasificarse como una investigación exploratoria descriptiva, con un enfoque cualitativo, realizado a través de entrevistas semiestructuradas y examinado mediante una técnica de análisis de contenido. Los temas de investigación están formados en parte por profesores vinculados a la Universidad Federal de Santa María, que han publicado al menos un libro como autor u organizador del trabajo. Los resultados obtenidos comienzan con la caracterización de los perfiles personales, profesionales y publicaciones referentes a los 20 autores participantes, seguidos de la identificación y sistematización del proceso de decisión adoptado por los profesores de UFSM al elegir un editor, pasando por la búsqueda de información, evaluación de alternativas, consumo de servicios y evaluación posconsumo. Aún, se identificaron las estrategias de decisión utilizadas para determinar el editor empleado por los participantes, evidenciando, entre otros aspectos, el bajo factor de lealtad para la decisión en la publicación de libros y que la elección se describe principalmente a partir de los atributos, teniendo una relación de dependencia con la intención que el autor pretende para el libro. Finalmente, se proponen mejoras en las prácticas de gestión de la Editora UFSM que actúen de acuerdo con las demandas de los autores, verificadas a partir de los criterios identificados.Este estudo visa compreender e identificar como se desenvolve o processo de decisão por uma editora para a publicação de livros científicos, técnicos e profissionais (CTP), adotada pelos docentes da UFSM. Devido a particularidades, esta pesquisa baseou-se em Zeithaml e Bitner e Blackwell et al, bem como em trabalhos voltados ao processo decisório de Prado e Barcellos. Este trabalho pode ser classificado como uma pesquisa de natureza exploratória descritiva, com abordagem qualitativa, realizada via entrevistas semiestruturadas e examinada via técnica de análise de conteúdo. Os sujeitos da pesquisa são formados em parte por docentes vinculados à Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, que tenham publicado ao menos um livro como autor ou organizador de obra. Os resultados obtidos iniciam-se com a caracterização dos perfis pessoal, profissional e das publicações referentes aos 20 autores participantes, seguida pela identificação e sistematização do processo de decisão adotado pelos docentes da UFSM na escolha de uma editora, passando pela busca de informações, avaliação de alternativas, consumo dos serviços e avaliação pós-consumo. Ainda, foram identificadas as estratégias de decisão utilizadas para a determinação da editora empregada pelos participantes, evidenciando, entre outros aspectos, o baixo fator de lealdade para decisão em publicação de livros e que a escolha se delineia principalmente a partir dos atributos, possuindo relação de dependência com a intenção que o autor pretende para o livro.
