Comparison between triglycerides and cholesterol concentrations in saliva and blood

Resumo: Introduction: sialochemical studies demonstrate that saliva has biomolecular proportions similar to blood, and can function as a means of diagnosing cardiovascular diseases whose factors are dyslipidemia. Objective: To assess the correlation between blood lipid concentrations and saliva. Methodology: The unstimulated saliva of 40 dentistry students, ages 18 to 29, both genders, was collected by the modified Navazesh method, then centrifuged. A venipuncture for blood collection was performed, then the blood was centrifuged and the serum separated. Labtest® kits were measured for salivary and blood cholesterol and triglycerides using the colorimetric enzymatic method. Statistically, paired Student's t-test and Pearson's correlation test were used. The results were expressed as mean more or less the standard error of the mean (e.p.m). Graph Pad Prism software version 6.01 was used. Results: 72.5% of the participants were female and 27.5% male, the average age was 21.55 ± 0.41 for the female gender and 21.64 ± 1.07 for the male. The average age of individuals of both genders was 21.63 ± 0.41 years. Sialometric data showed an average salivary flow of 0.71 ± 0.15 ml / min. The values of cholesterol and salivary triglycerides were significantly lower when compared to serum values and there was no correlation between these parameters. Conclusion: Saliva showed lower cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations than blood, with no significant correlation of these lipids between fluids.

Objetivo: evaluar la correlación entre las concentraciones de lípidos en sangre y la saliva. Metodología: La saliva no estimulada de 40 estudiantes de odontología, de 18 a 29 años, de ambos sexos, se recogió mediante el método Navazesh modificado, luego se centrifugó. Se realizó una punción venosa para la extracción de sangre, luego se centrifugó la sangre y se separó el suero. Los kits Labtest® se midieron para determinar el colesterol y los triglicéridos en la saliva y en la sangre utilizando el método enzimático colorimétrico. Estadísticamente, se utilizaron la prueba t de Student y la prueba de correlación de Pearson. Los resultados se expresaron como media más o menos del error estándar de la media (e.p.m). Se utilizó el software Graph Pad Prism versión 6.01. Resultados: 72.5% de los participantes eran mujeres y 27.5% hombres, la edad promedio fue 21.55 ± 0.41 para mujeres y 21.64 ± 1.07 para hombres. La edad promedio de las personas de ambos sexos fue de 21.63 ± 0.41 años. Los datos sialométricos mostraron un flujo salival promedio de 0.71 ± 0.15 ml / min. Los valores de colesterol y triglicéridos salivales fueron significativamente más bajos en comparación con los valores séricos y no hubo correlación entre estos parámetros. A média de idade dos indivíduos de ambos os gêneros foi de 21,63 ± 0,41 anos. Os dados sialométricos mostraram uma média de fluxo salivar de 0,71 ± 0,15 ml/min. Os valores de colesterol e triglicerídeos salivares foram significantemente menores quando comparados aos valores séricos e não foi observada correlação entre estes parâmetros.
