Drying of industrial ceramic bricks and process parameter estimation: an advanced concentrated approach

Resumo: This work aims to study the drying of porous and arbitrarily shaped solids using the concentrated analysis method. An advanced phenomenological mathematical model based on concentrated analysis and its exact solution are presented to predict the mass and heat transfers in industrial hollow ceramic bricks and to estimate the transport coefficients. Different simulations were carried out to evaluate the effect of air temperature on the drying process. Transient results of the moisture content and temperature of the brick, and of the convective heat and mass transfer coefficients are presented and discussed. It was found that the higher the temperature the greater the convective heat and mass transfer coefficients on the brick surface, and the faster the product loses moisture and raises its temperature. From the study, an optimized drying condition of the industrial ceramic brick is proposed in order to minimize defects in the post-drying product, increase its quality for the firing step, and reduce waste of raw material and save energy in the process.

Se presenta un modelo matemático fenomenológico avanzado basado en análisis concentrado y su solución exacta para predecir las transferencias de masa y calor en ladrillos cerámicos de fundición industrial y estimar los coeficientes de transporte. Se realizaron diferentes simulaciones para evaluar el efecto de la temperatura del aire en el proceso de secado. Se presentan y discuten los resultados transitorios del contenido de humedad y la temperatura del ladrillo, y los coeficientes de transferencia de masa y de calor convectivos. Se encontró que cuanto más alta es la temperatura, mayores son los coeficientes de calor convectivo y transferencia de masa en la superficie del ladrillo, y más rápido el producto pierde humedad y aumenta su temperatura. A partir del estudio, se propone una condición de secado optimizada del ladrillo cerámico industrial con el fin de minimizar los defectos en el producto post-secado, aumentar su calidad para la etapa de cocción, reducir el desperdicio de materia prima y ahorrar energía en el proceso.Este trabalho objetiva estudar a secagem de sólidos porosos e com forma arbitraria usando o método da análise concentrada. Um modelo matemático fenomenológico avançado baseado numa análise concentrada e sua solução exata são apresentados para predizer as transferências de massa e calor em tijolos cerâmicos vazados industriais e estimar os coeficientes de transporte. Diferentes simulações foram realizadas para avaliar o efeito da temperatura do ar no processo de secagem. Resultados transientes do teor de umidade e temperatura do tijolo, e dos coeficientes de transferência de calor e massa convectivos são apresentados e discutidos. Verificou-se que, quanto maior a temperatura, maiores são os coeficientes de transferência de calor e massa convectivos na superfície do tijolo, e mais rápido o produto perde umidade e eleva sua temperatura.
