Aspects related to food consumption in autistic children: a literature review

Resumo: Objective: to identify scientific evidence on aspects related to the food consumption of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) available in the literature so far. Methodology: This is a qualitative and exploratory literature review, with a theoretical approach, in which the databases used were: Virtual Health Library (BVS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), Latin American Literature and the Caribbean in Health Sciences (LILACS), National Library of Medicine (PUBMED), in addition to electronic journals and the CAPES journal, between the periods of 2017 and 2021. Results: After applying the defined inclusion and exclusion criteria, we added 14 articles. It was identified in the studies that children with ASD demonstrate high rates of overweight and obesity, in addition to gastrointestinal changes, which may be directly related to the high consumption of foods rich in calories. As for the behavior pattern, high selectivity and food refusal stood out. Conclusion: it is concluded that therapeutic behaviors, such as cooking workshops, nutritional education tasks, interaction of autistic children with food, in addition to constant stimulation and other strategies carried out by health professionals and parents/guardians to demonstrate and motivate about the importance of healthy eating are necessary for the improvement of these conditions

Método: Se trata de una revisión bibliográfica cualitativa y exploratoria, con enfoque teórico, en la que se utilizaron las bases de datos: Biblioteca Virtual en Salud (BVS), Biblioteca Científica Electrónica en Línea (SCIELO), Literatura Latinoamericana y del Caribe en Ciencias de la Salud (LILACS), Biblioteca Nacional de Medicina (PUBMED), además de las revistas electrónicas y la revista CAPES, entre los períodos 2017 y 2021. Resultados: Luego de aplicar los criterios de inclusión y exclusión definidos, agregamos 14 artículos. Se identificó en los estudios que los niños con TEA presentan altos índices de sobrepeso y obesidad, además de alteraciones gastrointestinales, que pueden estar directamente relacionadas con el alto consumo de alimentos ricos en calorías. En cuanto al patrón de comportamiento, se destacó la alta selectividad y el rechazo al alimento. Conclusión: se concluye que las conductas terapéuticas, como talleres de cocina, tareas de educación nutricional, interacción de niños autistas con los alimentos, además de estimulación constante y otras estrategias realizadas por profesionales de la salud y padres/tutores para demostrar y motivar sobre la importancia de una alimentación sana es necesaria para la mejora de estas condiciones.Objetivo: identificar evidências científicas sobre os aspectos relacionados ao consumo alimentar de crianças com Transtorno do Espectro Autista (TEA) disponíveis na literatura até o momento. Método: Trata-se de uma revisão da literatura, de natureza qualitativa e exploratória, com abordagem teórica, em que as bases de dados utilizadas foram: Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde da (BVS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), Literatura Latino Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), National Library of Medicine (PUBMED), além de revistas eletrônicas e o periódico CAPES, entre os períodos de 2017 a 2021. Resultados: Após aplicação dos critérios de inclusão e exclusão definidos, somaram-se 14 artigos. Identificou-se nos estudos que as crianças com o TEA demonstram elevados índices de sobrepeso e obesidade, além de alterações gastrointestinais podendo estar diretamente relacionada ao alto consumo de alimentos ricos em calorias. Quanto ao padrão de comportamento destacou-se elevada seletividade e recusa alimentar.
