Resumo: | Based on researches carried out in the ambit of History of Education, this article aims to present the relevance of the General Director role and its contributions to the public education of Rio Grande do Norte in the period of 1845-1889. We consider for the realization of this study the reasons that led to the creation of this role, as well as the functions attributed to it. The methodology adopted consists on the analysis of documents that refer to the legislation of teaching and messages from governors. In this way, we analyze the relevance of this function from the data contained in these sources. Based on the results obtained, we came to the conclusion that this role exerted a great influence on the structuring of the education system through the fiscalization character strongly attributed to the General Director in Rio Grande do Norte. |

Consideramos para la realización de este estudio los motivos que condujeron a la creación de ese cargo, así como las funciones atribuidas a él. La metodología adoptada se refiere al análisis de documentos que se refieren a la legislación de la enseñanza de la época y mensajes de los gobernantes. De esta forma, analizamos la relevancia de esta función a partir de los datos contenidos en estas fuentes. A partir de un panorama general de la Instrucción Pública en el Estado, trazado con base en los resultados encontrados, llegamos a la conclusión de que este cargo ejerció gran influencia en la estructuración del sistema de enseñanza a través del carácter de fiscalización fuertemente atribuido al Director general en Rio Grande do Norte .Com base em pesquisas realizadas no âmbito da História da Educação, este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar a relevância do cargo de Diretor Geral e suas contribuições para a instrução pública do Rio Grande do Norte no período de 1845-1889. Consideramos para a realização deste estudo os motivos que conduziram à criação desse cargo, bem como as funções atribuídas a ele. A metodologia adotada concerne à análise de documentos que se referem à legislação do ensino da época e mensagens dos governantes. Dessa forma, analisamos a relevância dessa função a partir dos dados contidos nestas fontes.
