Bioretention systems for stormwater management: overview and design criteria

Resumo: Rampant urbanization alters the hydrological cycle by intense waterproofing and a consequent reduction in rainwater infiltration. The need to restore the natural conditions of urban basins for the proper management of runoff is evident. This paper describes the state of the art about bioretention systems (rain gardens, bioretention tree pits, bioretention swale and anaerobic bioretention system). Such systems represent alternatives to traditional urban drainage, making possible the recovery of pre-urbanization hydrological conditions. Based on broad bibliographical research, the performance of these structures proves their efficiency regarding the quantitative and qualitative aspects of runoff. However, the lack of information in countries with different weather conditions from those in which research was carried out demonstrates the need to propose general design criteria for applying bioretention systems effectively. Therefore, this paper presents, in general terms, the main design criteria of bioretention systems serving as a guide for future work.

Es evidente la necesidad de restaurar las condiciones naturales de las cuencas urbanas para el debido manejo de la escorrentía superficial. Este artículo describe el estado del arte sobre los sistemas de biorretención (jardines de lluvia, sumideros filtrantes, zanjas de infiltración y humedales). Estos sistemas representan alternativas a los clásicos sistemas de drenaje convencionales, permitiendo el rescate de las condiciones hidrológicas de la reurbanización. El desempeño de tales estructuras, verificado a través de una intensa investigación bibliográfica, corrobora su eficiencia en términos de aspectos cualitativos y cuantitativos de la escorrentía superficial. Por otro lado, la falta de dicha información, para países con climas diferentes a aquellos donde se realiza la investigación, demuestra la necesidad de proponer criterios generales de diseño para la aplicación efectiva. De esta forma en líneas generales, este trabajo presenta los principales criterios para el diseño de sistemas de biorretención, sirviendo de guía para trabajos futuros.A urbanização desordenada altera o ciclo hidrológico pela intensa impermeabilização e consequente redução da infiltração das águas pluviais. Evidencia-se a necessidade de restauração das condições naturais das bacias urbanas para o devido manejo do escoamento superficial. O presente artigo descreve o estado da arte acerca dos sistemas de biorretenção (jardins de chuva, canteiros pluviais, biovaletas e lagoas pluviais). Tais sistemas representam alternativas aos sistemas clássicos de drenagem convencional, possibilitando o resgate das condições hidrológicas de pré-urbanização.  O desempenho de tais estruturas, verificado com base em intensa pesquisa bibliográfica, corrobora a eficiência das mesmas quanto aos aspectos quali-quantitativos do escoamento superficial. Por outro lado, a carência de tais informações para países de climas diversos daqueles onde as pesquisas se desenvolvem, demonstram a necessidade da proposição de critérios gerais de projeto para a efetiva aplicação.
