Food surveys and surveys of living conditions in Brazil in the 1930s

Resumo: This article analyzes food surveys and research on living conditions carried out in Brazil in the 1930s. It is a documentary analysis whose data collection took place in newspaper collections in the National Digital Library, in the Revista do Arquivo Municipal de São Paulo, on the website of the Fundação Escola de Sociologia e Política de São Paulo, in the Digital Library of the Fundação Sistema Estadual de Análise de Dados Statísticos and in the book Research on the standard of living of workers in the city of São Paulo, from March to June 2021. Five surveys were identified and analyzed: Survey on popular food in a neighborhood of São Paulo; The living conditions of the working class in Recife - Economic study of their food; The standard of living of workers in the city of São Paulo; Survey on the standard of living of the families of public cleaning workers in the municipality of São Paulo; and the Survey to establish the minimum wage. Methodological differences were identified between two groups, one of physicians and the other of sociologists, especially regarding the data collection instrument: a questionnaire by physicians and notebooks by sociologists. Food was the main expense of families at the time; and two different points of view on the subject were observed: economic and nutritional. The findings also indicate that the surveys were, at the same time, a product and producer of the construction of working class food as a social problem in Brazil.

Los datos, fueran colectados entre Marzo y Junio de 2021, en acervos de periódicos en la Biblioteca Nacional Digital, en la Revista de Archivo Municipal de São Paulo, en el sítio de la Fundación Escuela de Sociologia y Política de São Paulo, en la Biblioteca Digital de la Fundación Sistema Estadual de Análisis de Datos Estadísticos y en el livro Las Investigaciones Sobre el Padrón de Vida de Los Trabajadores de la Ciudad de São Paulo. Fueran analizadas cinco investigaciones: Encuestas Sobre la alimentacion poupular en un bario de São Paulo; Las condiciones de Vida de la clase obrera en Recife - Estudio Económico de tu alimentación; El Nível de Vida de los obreros de la Ciudad de São Paulo; Investigación de Nível de Vida de las famílias de trabajadores de limpieza pública del município de São Paulo; Y la Encuesta para establecimientos del salário minimo. Fueran Indetificados, diferencias metodológicas entre los dos grupos, especialmente en lo que respecta al instrumento de recolección de datos: los medicos, exámen y por los sociologos cuadernos. La alimentación era el gasto principal de las famílias en la época. Se identificó, dos puntos de vista: económico y nutricional. La investigación muestra, que las encuestas fueram simultaneamente producto y productor de la construción de la alimentación de la clase obrera como um problema social en el Brasil.Este artigo analisa os inquéritos alimentares e pesquisas de condições de vida realizados no Brasil na década de 1930. Trata-se de uma análise documental cuja coleta dos dados se deu em acervos de jornais na Biblioteca Nacional Digital, na Revista do Arquivo Municipal de São Paulo, no site da Fundação Escola de Sociologia e Política de São Paulo, na Biblioteca Digital da Fundação Sistema Estadual de Análise de Dados Estatísticos e no livro As pesquisas sobre o padrão de vida dos trabalhadores da cidade de São Paulo, no período de março a junho de 2021. Foram identificadas e analisadas cinco pesquisas: Inquérito sobre a alimentação popular em um bairro de São Paulo; As condições de vida da classe operária no Recife - Estudo econômico de sua alimentação; O padrão de vida dos operários da cidade de São Paulo; Pesquisa de padrão de vida das famílias dos operários da limpeza pública da municipalidade de São Paulo; e o Inquérito para estabelecimento do salário mínimo. Foram identificadas diferenças metodológicas entre dois grupos, um de médicos e outro de sociólogos, sobretudo quanto ao instrumento de coleta de dados: questionário pelos médicos e cadernetas pelos sociólogos. A alimentação era o principal gasto das famílias à época; e dois diferentes pontos de vista sobre o tema foram observados: econômico e nutricional.
