The impact of Covid-19 pandemic on Medical School in a city in Northeast of Brazil

Resumo: | Introduction: With the social isolation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, student access to classrooms was extremely limited, especially during the beginning, when Universities were closed. From then on, the Ministry of Health, together with the Ministry of Education, approved the use of Distance Education for the Medicine Course. Objective: to analyze the benefits and limitations of Distance Education in Medicine during the pandemic, the acceptance, the possible failures in student learning and the effects on non-cognitive skills. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive, quantitative study with undergraduate medical students from a teaching institution in the city of Teresina - PI. An online questionnaire was used to reach undergraduate students. Results and Discussion: Knowledge about the ambivalence between the benefits and limitations of Distance Education brings with it, in addition to the technological potential itself, the individual impact on the personal skills of those who are in training. Conclusion: Once Distance Education has been established in many educational institutions, this resource imposes studies and evaluations on its addition in the current scenario, since, in addition to technical knowledge, it requires, on the part of medical students, the development of non-cognitive skills, such as the active search for learning, leadership and overcoming procrastination. |

A partir de entonces, el Ministerio de Salud, en conjunto con el Ministerio de Educación, aprobó el uso de la Educación a Distancia para la Carrera de Medicina. Objetivo: analizar los beneficios y limitaciones de la Educación a Distancia en Medicina durante la pandemia, la aceptación, los posibles fracasos en el aprendizaje de los estudiantes y los efectos en las habilidades no cognitivas. Metodología: Se trata de un estudio transversal, descriptivo, cuantitativo con estudiantes de graduación en medicina de una institución de enseñanza de la ciudad de Teresina - PI. Se utilizó un cuestionario en línea para llegar a los estudiantes de pregrado. Resultados y Discusión: El conocimiento sobre la ambivalencia entre los beneficios y limitaciones de la Educación a Distancia trae consigo, además del propio potencial tecnológico, el impacto individual en las competencias personales de quienes están en formación. Conclusión: Una vez implantada la Educación a Distancia en muchas instituciones educativas, este recurso impone estudios y valoraciones sobre su incorporación en el escenario actual, ya que, además de conocimientos técnicos, exige, por parte de los estudiantes de medicina, el desarrollo de no habilidades cognitivas, como la búsqueda activa de aprendizaje, el liderazgo y la superación de la procrastinación.Introdução: Com o isolamento social decorrente da pandemia de COVID-19, o acesso dos estudantes às salas de aula ficou extremamente limitado, principalmente durante o início, em que as Universidades estiveram fechadas. A partir de então, o Ministério da Saúde, juntamente ao Ministério da Educação, aprovou o recurso da Educação à Distância para o Curso de Medicina. Objetivos: analisar os benefícios e limitações da Educação à Distância na Medicina durante a pandemia, a sua aceitação, suas possíveis falhas na aprendizagem dos alunos e seus efeitos sobre habilidades não cognitivas. Metodologia: Trata-se de um estudo transversal, descritivo, quantitativo com estudantes de graduação em Medicina de uma instituição de ensino da cidade de Teresina - PI. Um questionário online foi usado para alcançar os alunos de graduação. Resultados e Discussão: O conhecimento acerca ambivalência entre benefícios e limitações da Educação à Distância traz consigo, além do potencial tecnológico em si, o impacto individual nas habilidades pessoais daqueles que se encontram em formação.
