The knowledge of medical students, from a medical school in Recife, about immunization

Resumo: Objective: To assess the knowledge of medical students about immunization. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out using a 53-question questionnaire involving the main aspects of the available vaccines. The global assessment considered as unsatisfactory knowledge less than 27 correct questions (<50%), satisfactory from 27 to 40 (50 to 75%) and very satisfactory above 40 correct answers (> 75%). Results: A total of 351 medical students were analyzed, distributed over all periods of graduation. The students' age range was 17 to 38 years, where 29.9% were male and 70.1% female. In the global assessment, 59.5% had unsatisfactory knowledge, 37.6% satisfactory and only 2.8% as very satisfactory. The use of BCG in HIV patients and the hepatitis B vaccination schedule were answered correctly in 27.6% and 56.1% respectively. Most students (64.7%) responded correctly about the Influenza vaccination during pregnancy, although only 8.3% knew about adverse reactions to DTP. Regarding the HPV vaccine, 72.4% of adequate knowledge about its importance in the prevention of cervical cancer was obtained. When assessed whether meningococcal C vaccine was included in the vaccination schedule, 66.7% responded correctly. There was progression of knowledge with the year of graduation (p <0.05). Conclusion: The knowledge, in general, about vaccines by medical students was considered unsatisfactory, which corroborates the need for greater inclusion of this content in the curriculum.

Métodos: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo transversal mediante un cuestionario de 53 preguntas que incluyó los principales aspectos de las vacunas disponibles. La evaluación global consideró como conocimiento insatisfactorio menos de 27 preguntas correctas (<50%), satisfactorio de 27 a 40 (50 a 75%) y muy satisfactorio por encima de 40 respuestas correctas (> 75%). Resultados: Se analizaron un total de 351 estudiantes de medicina, distribuidos en todos los períodos de graduación. El rango de edad de los estudiantes fue de 17 a 38 años, donde el 29,9% eran hombres y el 70,1% mujeres. En la evaluación global, el 59,5% tenía conocimientos insatisfactorios, el 37,6% satisfactorios y solo el 2,8% muy satisfactorios. El uso de BCG en pacientes con VIH y el calendario de vacunación contra la hepatitis B se respondieron correctamente en el 27,6% y el 56,1% respectivamente. La mayoría de los estudiantes (64,7%) respondió correctamente sobre la vacunación contra la influenza durante el embarazo, aunque solo el 8,3% conocía las reacciones adversas a la DTP. En cuanto a la vacuna contra el VPH, se obtuvo un 72,4% de conocimiento adecuado sobre su importancia en la prevención del cáncer de cuello uterino. Cuando se evaluó si la vacuna meningocócica C se incluyó en el calendario de vacunación, el 66,7% respondió correctamente. Hubo progresión del conocimiento con el año de graduación (p <0.05). Conclusión: Se consideró insatisfactorio el conocimiento, en general, sobre vacunas por parte de los estudiantes de medicina, lo que corrobora la necesidad de una mayor inclusión de este contenido en el currículo.Objetivo: Verificar o conhecimento dos estudantes de medicina sobre imunização. Métodos: Foi realizado um estudo transversal descritivo, através de um questionário com 53 perguntas envolvendo os aspectos principais das vacinas disponíveis. A avaliação global considerou como conhecimento insatisfatório menos de 27 questões corretas (< 50%), satisfatório de 27 a 40 (50 a 75%) e muito satisfatório acima de 40 acertos (> 75%). Resultados: Um total de 351 alunos de medicina foram analisados, distribuídos por todos os períodos da graduação. A faixa etária dos alunos foi de 17 a 38 anos, onde 29,9% eram do sexo masculino e 70,1% do sexo feminino. Na avaliação global, 59,5% apresentaram conhecimento insatisfatório, 37,6% satisfatório e apenas 2,8% como muito satisfatório. O uso da BCG em portadores de HIV e o esquema vacinal da hepatite B foram respondidos de forma correta em 27,6% e 56,1% respectivamente. A maioria dos alunos (64,7%) respondeu corretamente sobre a vacinação Influenza na gestação, embora apenas 8,3% conheciam reações adversas DTP. Em relação à vacina HPV obteve-se 72,4% de conhecimento adequado sobre sua importância na prevenção do câncer de colo uterino. Quando avaliados se a vacina meningocócica C estava incluída no calendário vacinal, 66,7% respondeu corretamente.
