The genus Butia (Arecaceae) with emphasis on the species Butia exilata and Butia lallemantii: a review

Resumo: | The Arecaceae family is considered the third largest botanical family, with a predominantly pantropical distribution. Among its genera, the Butia genus stands out, which differs from the others in that it presents an upward disposition of conduplicated leaflets and the presence of pores in the endocarp. The Butia genus has potential in the production of hearts of palm, oils, starch, waxes, fibers and in food. However, there is little scientific information that can contribute to the species of this genus being used as a genetic resource in the expansion of family farming, in the diversification of agribusiness, in the development of cultural handicrafts and in regional cuisine. In addition, many species of this genus are threatened with extinction and studies on their current state and conservation measures are of great importance. The work demonstrates that the evolutionary relationship within the genus Butia is not well resolved and there are divergences between authors regarding genetic variability within and between populations. The restricted geographical distribution and the divergences in scientific information on the genus Butia represent preponderant conditions for the search for understanding in future works on the ecological characterization, genomics and conservation measures of the species Butia exilata and Butia lallemanti, the only palm trees with the cespitoso habit belonging to the genus Butia. |

Entre sus géneros destaca el género Butia, que se diferencia de los demás en que presenta una disposición ascendente de folíolos conduplicados y la presencia de poros en el endocarpio. El género Butia tiene potencial en la producción de palmito, aceites, almidón, ceras, fibras y en alimentos. Sin embargo, existe poca información científica que pueda contribuir a que las especies de este género sean utilizadas como recurso genético en la expansión de la agricultura familiar, en la diversificación de la agroindustria, en el desarrollo de artesanías culturales y en la cocina regional. Además, muchas especies de este género se encuentran en peligro de extinción y los estudios sobre su estado actual y las medidas de conservación son de gran importancia. El trabajo demuestra que la relación evolutiva dentro del género Butia no está bien resuelta y existen divergencias entre autores con respecto a la variabilidad genética dentro y entre poblaciones. La distribución geográfica restringida y las divergencias en la información científica sobre el género Butia representan condiciones preponderantes para la búsqueda de entendimiento en futuros trabajos sobre la caracterización ecológica, genómica y medidas de conservación de las especies Butia exilata y Butia lallemanti, únicas palmeras con hábito cespitoso. perteneciente al género Butia.A família Arecaceae é considerada a terceira maior família botânica, apresentando distribuição predominantemente pantropical. Dentre seus gêneros destaca-se o gênero Butia que se diferencia dos demais por apresentar disposição ascendente dos folíolos conduplicados e a presença de poros no endocarpo. O gênero Butia apresenta potencialidades na produção de palmitos, óleos, amido, ceras, fibras e na alimentação. No entanto, existe pouca informação cientifica que possa contribuir para que as espécies desse gênero sejam utilizadas como um recurso genético na expansão da agricultura familiar, na diversificação do agronegócio, no desenvolvimento do artesanato cultural e na gastronomia regional. Além disso, muitas espécies desse gênero estão ameaçadas de extinção e estudos sobre o seu estado atual e medidas de conservação são de grande importância. O trabalho demonstra que a relação evolutiva dentro do gênero Butia não está bem resolvida e há divergências entre autores quanto a variabilidade genética dentro e entre populações.
