The effect of the vegetarian diet on the performance of endurance practitioners

Resumo: | Vegetarianism is a dietary pattern in which meat of animal origin is totally excluded, and which may present some classifications (ovo-lactovegetarian, lacto-vegetarian, ovo-vegetarian), depending on the inclusion of some foods of animal origin. Last years, interest in vegetarian diets associated with sports has increased significantly. Many athletes have been adhering to vegetarian food, generating discussion if this type of food provides the necessary nutrients, even more so when it comes to performance, since endurance athletes need a greater intake of macro and micronutrients. Therefore, the present study aimed to analyze the effect of a vegetarian diet on the performance of endurance sports practitioners. This is a narrative literature review, where articles published in the last 10 years (2011 to 2021) in PubMed, SciELO and Lilacs databases were analyzed. Studies show that through strategic selection and management of food choices, a properly planned vegetarian diet meets the energy, macro and micronutrient needs for good performance in endurance sports, as well as health as a whole. However, it is necessary to pay attention to the nutritional support of proteins, omega 3, vitamin B12, vitamin D, iron and calcium. |

En los últimos años, el interés por las dietas vegetarianas asociadas a la práctica deportiva ha aumentado significativamente. Muchos atletas se han adherido a la alimentación vegetariana, generando discusión sobre si este tipo de alimentación aporta los nutrientes necesarios, más aún cuando se trata de rendimiento, ya que los atletas de resistencia necesitan una mayor ingesta de macro y micronutrientes. Por lo tanto, el presente estudio tuvo como objetivo analizar el efecto de una dieta vegetariana en el rendimiento de los practicantes de deportes de resistencia. Esta es una revisión narrativa de la literatura, donde se analizaron artículos publicados en los últimos 10 años (2011 a 2021) en las bases de datos PubMed, SciELO y Lilacs. Los estudios demuestran que a través de la selección estratégica y la gestión de las elecciones de alimentos, una dieta vegetariana correctamente planificada, satisface las necesidades de energía, macro y micronutrientes para un buen rendimiento en los deportes de resistencia, así como para la salud en general. Sin embargo, es necesario prestar atención al aporte nutricional de proteínas, omega 3, vitamina B12, vitamina D, hierro y calcio.O vegetarianismo é um padrão alimentar no qual há exclusão total das carnes de origem animal, e que pode apresentar algumas classificações (ovolactovegetariano, lactovegetariano, ovovegetariano), a depender da inclusão de alguns alimentos de origem animal. Nos últimos anos, o interesse em dietas vegetarianas, associadas à prática esportiva tem aumentado de forma significativa. Muitos atletas vêm aderindo à prática alimentar vegetariana gerando discussão se esse tipo de alimentação disponibiliza os nutrientes necessários, ainda mais se tratando de desempenho, uma vez que, atletas de endurance necessitam de um aporte maior de macro e micronutrientes. Diante disso, o presente estudo teve como objetivo analisar o efeito da dieta vegetariana no desempenho de praticantes de esportes de endurance. Trata-se de uma revisão bibliográfica narrativa, onde foram analisados artigos publicados nos últimos 10 anos (2011 a 2021) nas bases de dados PubMed, SciELO e Lilacs. Os estudos demonstram que através da seleção estratégica e gestão de escolhas alimentares, a dieta vegetariana, adequadamente planejada, atende às necessidades energéticas, de macro e micronutrientes para um bom desempenho nos esportes de endurance, bem como na saúde como um todo.
