Evaluation of the antioxidant potential and antibacterial activity of the pulp extract of Psidium brownianum Mart. ex DC

Resumo: Species of the genus Psidium have come out to be efficient in terms of characteristics of nutritional interests, such as richness in vitamins and antioxidants. In addition, antibacterial activity has been evidenced by extracts from species of the genus Psidium. Thus, the present study aims to evaluate the antioxidant potential and antibacterial activity of Psidium brownianum Mart pulp extract. ex DC .. The total phenolic compounds were quantified by using the Folin - Ciocalteau reagent. The antioxidant potential of Psidium brownianum Mart. ex DC. was determined by the photocolorimetric method in vitro by sequestrating the stable free radical DPPH. To evaluate the antibacterial capacity of the extract, it was used the broth microdilution method. The total phenolic compounds found in the extract represent the value of 1211 mg GAE / 100 g of the sample. The extract of Psidium brownianum Mart. ex DC. Presented a high antioxidant potential, probably due to its high content of phenolic compounds. The species also evidenced inhibitory activity against all tested bacterial strains. According to this, it is possible to infer that the pulp of Psidium brownianum Mart. ex DC., comes out to be a rich source of total phenolic compounds and antioxidant potential, so ingesting it is important. As for antibacterial activity, further studies are needed involving possible associations of this extract with other substances, as a way to enhance its use.

Además, la actividad antibacteriana ha sido evidenciada por extractos de especies del género Psidium. Por lo tanto, el presente estudio tiene como objetivo evaluar el potencial antioxidante y la actividad antibacteriana del extracto de pulpa de Psidium brownianum Mart. ex DC .. Los compuestos fenólicos totales se cuantificaron usando el reactivo Folin - Ciocalteau. El potencial antioxidante de Psidium brownianum Mart. ex DC. se determinó por el método fotocolorimétrico in vitro mediante el secuestro del radical estable DPPH. Para evaluar la capacidad antibacteriana del extracto, utilizó el método de microdilución de caldo. Los compuestos fenólicos totales encontrados en el extracto representan el valor de 1211 mg de GAE / 100 g de la muestra. El extracto de Psidium brownianum Mart. ex DC. presentó alto potencial antioxidante, probablemente debido a su alto contenido de compuestos fenólicos. La especie también mostró actividad inhibitoria contra todas las cepas bacterianas analizadas. En vista de esto, es posible inferir que la pulpa de Psidium brownianum Mart. ex DC., se muestra que es una rica fuente de compuestos fenólicos y potencial antioxidante, por lo que su ingestión es importante. En cuanto a la actividad antibacteriana, se necesitan más estudios que involucren posibles asociaciones de este extracto con otras sustancias, como una forma de mejorar su uso.Espécies do gênero Psidium tem se apresentado eficiente quanto a características de interesses nutricionais, como riqueza em vitaminas e em substâncias antioxidantes. Além disso, atividade antibacteriana, tem sido evidenciada por extratos de espécies do gênero Psidium. Dessa forma, o presente estudo tem a finalidade avaliar o potencial antioxidante e a atividade antibacteriana do extrato da polpa de Psidium brownianum Mart. ex DC.. Os compostos fenólicos totais foram quantificados utilizando o reagente de Folin – Ciocalteau. O potencial antioxidante do extrato de Psidium brownianum Mart. ex DC. foi determinado pelo método fotocolorimétrico in vitro por sequestro do radical livre estável DPPH. Para avaliar a capacidade antibacteriana do extrato, fez uso do método de microdiluição em caldo. Os compostos fenólicos totais encontrados no extrato representam o valor de 1211 mg GAE/100 g da amostra. O extrato de Psidium brownianum Mart. ex DC. apresentou alto potencial antioxidante, provavelmente devido ao seu elevado teor de compostos fenólicos. A espécie também evidenciou atividade inibitória contra todas as cepas bacterianas testadas. À vista disso é possível inferir que a polpa de Psidium brownianum Mart. ex DC., mostra-se uma fonte rica em compostos fenólicos toais e potencial antioxidante, sendo assim sua ingestão se faz importante.
