Resumo: This article aims at studying the education project carried out in Natal/RN at the Campanha de Pé no Chão também se Aprende a Ler (Campaign Walking barefoot, We Also Learn to Read). The study identifies the illiteracy during the historical moment of Djalma Maranhão (1915 – 1971) as Mayor of Natal/RN. He had the purpose of fighting the alarming illiteracy numbers in the capital of Rio Grande do Norte. The research was based on the websites of INEP and IBGE. It, initially, emphasised a quantitative approach. However, after the results, we used a more qualitative approach for the analysis process. Our theoretical basis was on the studies of Moacyr de Góes (1980) and José Willington Germano (1989). The research also revealed that the illiteracy numbers faced in the 60s are still present in the society of Natal. Moreover, the numbers are higher if we consider absolute figures. In Brazil, the amount of illiterates challenges society to wipe out their destructive stains from people’s lives.

Se hace un estudio de los indicadores de analfabetismo identificados en el momento histórico marcado por la llegada de Djalma Maranhão (1915 - 1971) al ejecutivo municipal con el propósito de combatir el aterrador analfabetismo en la capital de Rio Grande do Norte. La investigación aquí desarrollada buscó subsidios en los portales del INEP y del IBGE, con énfasis en un enfoque inicialmente cuantitativo, pero en posesión de los resultados se utilizó un abordaje cualitativo para el necesario proceso de análisis de los datos. Como basamento teórico-metodológico, se dialoga principalmente con el pensamiento de Moacyr de Góes (1980) y José Willington Germano (1989). La investigación reveló que los índices de analfabetismo enfrentados en la década de 1960 siguen presentes en la sociedad natalense, incluso con cifras más elevadas si se consideran los valores absolutos. En el propio país, el monto de iletrados desafía a la sociedad a extirpar sus destructivas marcas en la vida de las personas.O objetivo deste artigo é estudar o projeto educacional concretizado em Natal/RN, por meio da Campanha de Pé no Chão também se Aprende a Ler. Faz-se um estudo dos indicadores de analfabetismo identificados no momento histórico marcado pela chegada de Djalma Maranhão (1915 – 1971) ao executivo municipal com o propósito de combater o estarrecedor analfabetismo na capital do Rio Grande do Norte. A pesquisa aqui desenvolvida buscou subsídios nos portais do INEP e do IBGE, com ênfase numa abordagem inicialmente quantitativa, porém de posse dos resultados utilizou-se de uma abordagem qualitativa para o necessário processo de análise dos dados. Como embasamento teórico-metodológico, dialoga-se principalmente com o pensamento de Moacyr de Góes (1980) e José Willington Germano (1989). A pesquisa revelou que os índices de analfabetismo enfrentados na década de 1960 continuam presentes na sociedade natalense, inclusive com números mais elevados se forem considerados os valores absolutos.
