Food biofortification and its relationship with food and nutrition security: pros and cons

Resumo: | The main purpose of biofortification is to increase the nutritional value of specific staple foods. Some researchers argue that biofortification is an important strategy to combat malnutrition and hidden hunger. Others, however, criticize it massively, pointing it out as a technique that does not promote human nutrition or food security. These divergences regarding the use of biotechnology and the use of genetic engineering in food production is one of the main controversies that have been debated in contemporary times. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to prepare a literature review to discuss the positive and negative aspects of food biofortification. For the development of investigations, research in digital libraries was used as a methodology, with the descriptors "biofortification", "nutrition", "hidden hunger", "food security", resulting in 48 works, being read and analyzed their results. respective abstracts and introductions, selected for discussion 27 scientific productions, published in the last 20 years in Portuguese. At the end of the research, it was concluded that food biofortification, despite having several positive attributes, is a complementary strategy to other interventions already in place and that it must be inserted in a context that contemplates an integrated food system, since malnutrition , hidden hunger and food and nutrition security are directly related to socio-political and socio-environmental issues. |

Algunos investigadores argumentan que la biofortificación es una estrategia importante para combatir la desnutrición y el hambre oculta. Otros, sin embargo, la critican masivamente, señalándola como una técnica que no promueve la nutrición humana ni la seguridad alimentaria. Estas divergencias en cuanto al uso de la biotecnología y el uso de la ingeniería genética en la producción de alimentos es una de las principales controversias que se han debatido en la época contemporánea. Por lo tanto, el objetivo del presente estudio fue preparar una revisión de la literatura para discutir los aspectos positivos y negativos de la biofortificación de alimentos. Para el desarrollo de las investigaciones se utilizó como metodología la investigación en bibliotecas digitales, con los descriptores “biofortificación”, “nutrición”, “hambre oculta”, “seguridad alimentaria”, dando como resultado 48 trabajos, siendo leídos y analizados sus respectivos resultados. resúmenes e introducciones, seleccionados para discusión 27 producciones científicas, publicadas en los últimos 20 años en portugués. Al final de la investigación, se concluyó que la biofortificación de alimentos, a pesar de tener varios atributos positivos, es una estrategia complementaria a otras intervenciones ya existentes y que debe insertarse en un contexto que contemple un sistema alimentario integrado, ya que la desnutrición, oculta el hambre y la seguridad alimentaria y nutricional están directamente relacionados con cuestiones sociopolíticas y socioambientales.A principal finalidade da biofortificação é aumentar o valor nutritivo de alimentos básicos específicos. Alguns pesquisadores defendem que a biofortificação configura-se como uma importante estratégia ao combate a desnutrição e a fome oculta. Outros, no entanto, diferem a ela maciças críticas, apontam-na como uma técnica que não promove a nutrição humana e nem a segurança alimentar. Essas divergências a respeito do emprego da biotecnologia e o uso da engenharia genética na produção de alimentos é uma das principais polêmicas que vem sendo debatidas na contemporaneidade. Sendo assim, o objetivo do presente estudo foi elaborar uma revisão da literatura para discutir os aspectos positivos e negativos sobre a biofortificação de alimentos. Para o desenvolvimento das investigações, utilizou-se como metodologia pesquisas em bibliotecas digitais, com os descritores “biofortificação”, “nutrição”, “fome oculta”, “segurança alimentar”, obtendo como resultado 48 trabalhos, sendo lidos e analisados os seus respectivos resumos e introduções, selecionados para a discussão 27 produções científicas, publicados nos últimos 20 anos em língua portuguesa.
