Antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity of Immunoglobulin Y: a literature review

Resumo: | Immunoglobulin Y (IgY), a term used to refer to the main serum antibody in chickens and present in large quantities in egg yolks, has been shown to be highly relevant in scientific circles in recent decades. Recent studies have advanced when studying the relationship of immunoglobulin with antimicrobial and antibiofilm actions. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to analyze structural and functional aspects of immunoglobulin Y as well as its antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity. For this, a search was performed in the PubMed / MEDLINE, Cochrane and EMBASE databases, using the MeSH / DeCS descriptors “Dental caries”, “IgY” and their derivates, associated with each other by the Boolean operator “AND” and adapted for each data base. In addition, a complementary search was made on Google Scholar and on the references of selected articles. After a critical reading of titles and abstracts, 10 studies were selected. The review includes studies published in the past 20 years. In addition to having a potential use in dental treatments, immunoglobulin Y was shown to be efficient in reducing pathogens such as Salmonella spp and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In the oral cavity, immunoglobulin showed a selective actio of bacteria Streptococcus mutans. However, there is no consensus in the literature about the action of IgY in candidiasis, nutritional and metabolic diseases. Therefore, immunoglobulin Y has a good antimicrobial action in vitro and in vivo in biofilm bacteria, but further studies are needed in order to elucidate its action against other bacteria and its clinical applicability. |

Estudios recientes han avanzado en el estudio de la relación de las inmunoglobulinas con las acciones antimicrobianas y antibiofilm. Por tanto, el objetivo del presente estudio es analizar los aspectos estructurales y funcionales de la inmunoglobulina Y, así como su actividad antimicrobiana y antibiofilm. Para ello, se realizó una búsqueda en las bases de datos PubMed / MEDLINE, Cochrane y EMBASE, utilizando los descriptores MeSH / DeCS “Caries dental”, “IgY” y sus derivados, asociados entre sí por el operador booleano “AND” y adaptados para cada uno base de dados. Además, se realizó una búsqueda complementaria en Google Scholar y en las referencias de los artículos seleccionados. Luego de una lectura crítica de títulos y resúmenes, se seleccionaron 10 estudios. La revisión incluye estudios publicados en los últimos 20 años. Además de tener un uso potencial en tratamientos dentales, la inmunoglobulina Y demostró ser eficiente en la reducción de patógenos como Salmonella spp y Pseudomonas aeruginosa. En la cavidad oral, la inmunoglobulina mostró una acción selectiva hacia la bacteria Streptococcus mutans. Sin embargo, no existe consenso en la literatura sobre la acción de IgY en candidiasis, enfermedades nutricionales y metabólicas, neoplasias, amigdalitis y resfriado común. Por lo tanto, la inmunoglobulina Y tiene una buena acción antimicrobiana in vitro e in vivo en bacterias biofilm, pero se necesitan más estudios para dilucidar su acción contra otras bacterias y su aplicabilidad clínica.A imunoglobulina Y (IgY), termo utilizado para referir-se ao principal anticorpo sérico em galinhas e presente em grande quantidade na gema do ovo, tem se mostrado altamente relevante no meio científico nas últimas décadas. A imunoglobulina Y além de apresentar um potencial uso em tratamentos odontológicos, mostrou-se eficiente quanto à redução de patógenos como a Salmonella spp e Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Na cavidade oral, a imunoglobulina apresentou atuação seletiva para com a bactéria Streptococcus mutans. Entretanto, não há um consenso na literatura sobre a ação da IgY na candidíase, doenças nutricionais e metabólicas, neoplasias, amigdalite e o resfriado comum.
