Management of the Poxim-Açu River: a Swat model for evaluating irrigation scenarios

Resumo: The present work has as main objective to apply the SWAT model to the Poxim-Açu River watershed, carrying out an assessment of its water production, having as object of study the filling of the Sindicalista Jaime Umbelino de Souza dam (São Cristóvão/SE). The problem is justified by the growing relevance of knowledge of the hydrological complex for the management of natural resources, due to its aid in decision making. Recording data measurements will later be used in 4 irrigation scenarios in two areas of the basin. It seeks to test the applicability of the model in studies of hydrological balance in small basins and the effects of natural interactions and human action, with the use of irrigation, on the flows and volumes produced. Through this study it can be concluded that: the SWAT model is applicable in the realization of simulations of water production and in the studies of the hydrological balance in the hydrographic basin of the Poxim-açú river; the development of a validating procedure, from the accumulation of water in the filling of a reservoir, allowed the evaluation of irrigation use scenarios; carrying out irrigation practices using water directly from the rivers would cause significant reductions in the volumes produced and could affect the filling of the Sindicalista Jaime Umbelino de Souza dam in São Cristovão-SE and the use of water for irrigation, coming from the shallow aquifer , can lead to reductions in the flows of the Poxim-açú River.

El problema se justifica por la creciente relevancia del conocimiento del complejo hidrológico para la gestión de los recursos naturales, por su ayuda en la toma de decisiones. Las mediciones de datos de registro se utilizarán posteriormente en 4 escenarios de riego en dos áreas de la cuenca. Se busca probar la aplicabilidad del modelo en estudios de balance hidrológico en pequeñas cuencas y los efectos de las interacciones naturales y la acción humana, con el uso del riego, sobre los caudales y volúmenes producidos. A través de este estudio se puede concluir que: el modelo SWAT es aplicable en la realización de simulaciones de producción de agua y en los estudios del balance hidrológico en la cuenca hidrográfica del río Poxim-açú; el desarrollo de un procedimiento de validación, a partir de la acumulación de agua en el llenado de un embalse, permitió la evaluación de escenarios de uso de riego; realizar prácticas de riego utilizando agua directamente de los ríos provocaría reducciones significativas en los volúmenes producidos y podría afectar el llenado de la represa Sindicalista Jaime Umbelino de Souza en São Cristovão-SE y el uso de agua para riego, proveniente del acuífero somero, puede conducir a reducciones en los caudales del río Poxim-açú.O presente trabalho tem como objetivo principal aplicar o modelo SWAT à bacia hidrográfica do Rio Poxim-Açu, realizando uma avaliação da produção de água da mesma, tendo como objeto de estudo o enchimento da barragem Sindicalista Jaime Umbelino de Souza (São Cristóvão/SE). A problemática justifica-se pela crescente relevância do conhecimento do complexo hidrológico para a gestão de recursos naturais, devido a seu auxílio na tomada de decisão. O registro de medições de dados será posteriormente usado em 4 cenários de irrigação em duas áreas da bacia. Busca-se testar a aplicabilidade do modelo em estudos de balanço hidrológico em pequenas bacias e os efeitos das interações naturais e da ação humana, com o uso da irrigação, nas vazões e volumes produzidos.
