The trajectory of teacher education offered at the Open University of Brazil-UAB in São Mateus-ES and the view of the graduates

Resumo: | A case study was accomplished to analyze the contributions and challenges of the Brazilian distance learning program (open University of Brazil-UAB) on teacher training. Besides, it was presented an overview of the consolidation of Polo UAB and the municipal demand for teacher training. Based on data analysis, it could be noted that courses were not offered to meet the required demand of the municipality. It was noted that former students from Polo UAB were approved in the last public contest to work in municipal and state government. Data analysis of a survey form, answered by tutors, showed high drop-out rates. These mainly refer to the student’s issues and student’s lack of time to accomplish commitments previously scheduled by the distance learning program. It was also noted that there were not enough incentives either to open new courses handling with the teacher training or to maintain the offers for vacancies in the existing courses. In the Brazilian distance learning program (Polo UAB), preventive strategies to assure student presence in the courses and instruments to indicate student absences were lacking. |

Un estudio de caso se ha realizado para investigar las contribuciones y desafíos de la educación a distancia (Universidad abierta de Brasil-UAB) para la formación del profesorado. Se presentó una descripción de la consolidación de la UAB presencial y la demanda de formación docente en São Mateus. A partir del análisis de los datos, se observó que los cursos ofrecidos no satisfacen plenamente la demanda del município. Sin embargo, en los cuestionarios respondidos por los egresados se observó una alta tasa de deserción en los cursos que ofrece el Centro UAB y que la principal causa se refiere a problemas personales y la falta de tiempo para que los estudiantes cumplan con los compromisos que exige la educación a distancia. También se puede notar, en esta trayectoria de 14 años, que hubo una falta de incentivos para la inserción de nuevos cursos orientados a la formación docente y la permanencia de la oferta de plazas en los cursos de educación a distancia existentes. En la propuesta del Polo UAB, a juicio de los egresados, los cursos ofertados son de calidad y sumamente relevantes para la formación continua del profesorado, lo que contribuye a la credibilidad de esta modalidad docente, aunque faltaron estrategias preventivas para asegurar la permanencia de los estudiantes en los cursos e instrumentos. para señalar la ausencia o incluso el abandono de los estudiantes.Neste trabalho foi realizado um estudo de caso para investigar as contribuições e desafios do ensino a distância (Polo Universidade Aberta do Brasil-UAB) para a formação docente. Inicialmente foi apresentada uma descrição da consolidação do Polo UAB de São Mateus e da demanda de formação docente do município de São Mateus. A partir da análise dos dados, notou-se que os cursos ofertados não atendem integralmente a demanda do município. Entretanto, nos questionários respondidos pelos egressos, observou-se um alto índice de evasão nos cursos ofertados pelo Polo UAB e que a maior causa refere-se à problemas pessoais e a falta de tempo dos alunos para cumprirem com os compromissos requeridos pelo ensino a distância. Pode-se notar, também, nessa trajetória de 14 anos que houve falta de incentivos à inserção de novos cursos voltados à formação docente e à permanência da oferta de vagas nos cursos EAD existentes. Na proposta do Polo UAB, na visão dos egressos, os cursos ofertados são de qualidade e extrema relevância para formação continuada dos docentes o que contribui na credibilidade dessa modalidade de ensino, embora tenham faltado estratégias preventivas para garantir a permanência dos alunos nos cursos e instrumentos para sinalizar a ausência ou, até mesmo, o abandono dos alunos.
