Resumo: | The present work aims to identify the prevalence of Major Depressive Disorder in medical academics from a university in Santa Catarina. A cross-sectional survey was conducted based on a questionnaire applied to academics at one University of Santa Catarina, based on Beck’s questionnaire added to some elements edited by the research authors. The questionnaire categorized the interviewee as corresponding to normality, dysphoria, and depression, using as a parameter the punctuation in each of the 21 groups of statements. The collected informations were analysed using a specific software. 122 students from six years of graduation participated. Most of those surveyed were single, with a predominance of the female gender. The prevalence of students with clinical presentation of major depressive disorder at the institution is 19,7%, with 8,2% are untreated. Factors such as leisure and the case of the disorder before entering university did not show significant correlation values with a current condition. However, factors such as course phase, the level of academic performance, the feeling of loneliness, and the female gender, are highly connected with the development of the pathology. The prevalence of the disorder identified in medical students is higher than the average of the general population. There is a need to recommend support services for counseling to Medical students from the first year of the course. |
