Mental health intervention strategies in the COVID-19 pandemic: systematic review

Resumo: Goals: The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of clinical trials dealing with mental health interventions in the COVID-19 scenario. Methods: The research of scientific papers was carried out by two independent researchers, including papers published until March 2021, as a full text in Portuguese or in English. The clinical trials used in the systematic review were obtained from the Pubmed and Scielo electronic databases. Results:  Through the analysis of the works included in the review, which addressed: philosophy intervention and mindfulness-based intervention in elementary school children; online multimedia psychoeducational intervention and integrated internet-based intervention in adult patients hospitalized with COVID-19; Intervention through the Awareness, Courage and Love (ACL) protocol in couples and intervention based on videos of forest environments in adults, the result was that online interventions can also be effective in improving mental health in the context of the pandemic of COVID-19. Although the analyzed studies addressed different audiences, in all of them the results of the intervention were positive in relation to what had been proposed. Conclusion: There are interventions performed in mental health in the context of COVID-19 that have high scientific evidence, being easy to perform and low cost. Therefore, public policies focused on the mental health of the population should be elaborated based on the available scientific evidence, aiming to reduce mental disorders arising or accentuated by the current scenario of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Métodos: La investigación de artículos científicos fue realizada por dos investigadores independientes, incluidos artículos publicados hasta marzo de 2021, como texto completo en portugués o en inglés. Los ensayos clínicos utilizados en la revisión sistemática se obtuvieron de las bases de datos electrónicas Pubmed y Scielo. Resultados: A través del análisis de los trabajos incluidos en la revisión, que abordaron: intervención filosófica e intervención basada en mindfulness en niños de primaria; intervención psicoeducativa multimedia en línea e intervención integrada basada en internet en pacientes adultos hospitalizados con COVID-19; Intervención a través del protocolo Awareness, Courage and Love (ACL) en parejas e intervención basada en videos de ambientes forestales en adultos, el resultado fue que las intervenciones en línea también pueden ser efectivas para mejorar la salud mental en el contexto de la pandemia de COVID-19. Si bien los estudios analizados se dirigieron a diferentes públicos, en todos ellos los resultados de la intervención fueron positivos en relación a lo planteado. Conclusión: Existen intervenciones realizadas en salud mental en el contexto del COVID-19 que cuentan con alta evidencia científica, siendo de fácil realización y bajo costo. Por lo tanto, las políticas públicas enfocadas en la salud mental de la población deben ser elaboradas con base en la evidencia científica disponible, con el objetivo de reducir los trastornos mentales surgidos o acentuados por el actual escenario de pandemia por SARS-CoV-2.Objetivo: O objetivo do presente trabalho foi realizar uma revisão sistemática dos ensaios clínicos que tratam sobre intervenções em saúde mental no cenário da COVID-19. Métodos: A busca dos artigos científicos foi realizada por dois pesquisadores independentes, sendo incluídos trabalhos publicados até março de 2021, com texto completo em português ou em inglês. Os ensaios clínicos utilizados na revisão sistemática foram obtidos das bases de dados eletrônicas Pubmed e Scielo. Resultados: Através da análise dos trabalhos incluídos na revisão, que abordaram: intervenção de filosofia e intervenção baseada em mindfulness em crianças do ensino fundamental; intervenção psicoeducacional multimídia online e intervenção integrada baseada na internet em pacientes adultos hospitalizados com COVID-19; intervenção através do protocolo Consciência, Coragem e Amor (ACL) em casais e intervenção baseada em vídeos de ambientes florestais em adultos, chegou-se ao resultado de que intervenções realizadas de modo online também podem ser eficazes para melhorar a saúde mental no contexto  da pandemia da COVID-19. Apesar dos estudos analisados abordarem diferentes públicos, em todos eles os resultados da intervenção foram positivos em relação ao que se havia proposto. Conclusão: Existem intervenções realizadas em saúde mental no contexto da COVID-19 que possuem evidência científica de sua eficácia, sendo de fácil realização e de baixo custo.
