Communication and patient safety in an Intensive Care Unit: prospects of the multiprofissional health team

Resumo: | The objective of this study was to evaluate the patient safety culture related to communication in an Adult Intensive Care Unit of a hospital in the interior of the state of Rio Grande do Sul from the perspective of the multiprofessional health team. This is a survey study, carried out in October 2019, which used the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture questionnaire for data collection, and for the purposes of this study, the dimensions "Openness to communication" and "Shift and internal transfers" were evaluated, thus constituting 7 items. The survey had the participation of 54 health professionals, being the majority nursing technicians (48.15%), female (75.93%), aged between 20 and 29 years (61.11%), with time of work in intensive care units between 1 and 5 years (46.30%). The dimension "openness for communication" received and 59.26% of positive answers, being considered neutral and the dimension "change of shifts and internal transfers" received 33.80%, being considered fragile. It was evident that in the analysis of the two dimensions there are weaknesses in patient safety in the intensive care unit in the aspect evaluated, highlighting the need to discuss the issue in the unit under study and in all units of the hospital. |

El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la cultura de seguridad del paciente relacionada con la comunicación en una Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos de Adultos de un hospital del interior del estado de Rio Grande do Sul desde la perspectiva del equipo de salud multiprofesional. Se trata de un estudio del tipo Survey, realizado en octubre de 2019, que utilizó para la coleta de datos el cuestionario Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture, siendo para fines de este estudio, avaladas las dimensiones "Abertura para comunicación" y "Paso de planta y transferencias internas", constituyendo así, 7 itens. La encuesta contó con la participación de 54 profesionales sanitarios, siendo la mayoría técnicos de enfermería (48,15%), de sexo femenino (75,93%), con edades comprendidas entre los 20 y 29 años (61,11%), con tiempo de trabajo en unidades de cuidados intensivos entre 1 y 5 años (46,30%). La dimensión "apertura para la comunicación" recibió y el 59,26% de respuestas positivas, siendo considerada neutra y la dimensión "cambio de turnos y traslados internos" recibió el 33,80%, siendo considerada frágil. Se evidenció que en el análisis de las dos dimensiones abordadas existen debilidades en la seguridad del paciente dentro de la unidad de cuidados intensivos en el aspecto evaluado, destacando la necesidad de discutir el tema en la unidad en estudio y en todas las unidades del hospital. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a cultura de segurança do paciente relacionada a comunicação em uma Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Adulto de um hospital do interior do estado do Rio Grande do Sul na perspectiva da equipe multiprofissional de saúde. Trata de um estudo do tipo Survey, realizado em outubro de 2019, que utilizou para a coleta de dados o questionário Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture, sendo para fins deste estudo, avaliado as dimensões “Abertura para comunicação” e “Passagem de plantão e transferências internas”, constituindo assim, 7 itens. A pesquisa contou com a participação de 54 profissionais de saúde, sendo a maioria técnicos de enfermagem (48,15%), do sexo feminino (75,93%), com faixa etária entre 20 e 29 anos (61,11%), com tempo de trabalho em unidades de terapia intensiva entre 1 a 5 anos (46,30%). A dimensão “abertura para comunicação” recebeu e 59,26% de respostas positivas, sendo considerada neutra e a dimensão “passagem de plantão/turno e transferências internas” recebeu 33,80%, sendo considerada frágil. Evidenciou-se que na análise das duas dimensões abordadas existem fragilidades na segurança do paciente dentro da unidade de terapia intensiva no aspecto avaliado, destacando a necessidade de se discutir a temática na unidade em estudo e em todas as unidades do hospital.
