Resumo: Literature has shown that probiotics can be a possible ally in the prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases. The present study aims to review the literature regarding the use of probiotics in prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases. In most of the clinical studies included in this literature review, probiotics showed favorable results when used in prevention and as an adjunct to the treatment of gingivitis and periodontitis, bringing an improvement in the plaque index, gingival index and reduction in probing depth, in addition to the reduction of periodontopathogenic microorganisms and alteration of the immune response. Probiotics showed favorable results in most clinical studies included in this literature review, when used in prevention and as an adjunct. Further studies are still needed to establish clearer protocols regarding the most indicated strains, form of administration and time of use.

El presente estudio tiene como objetivo revisar la literatura sobre el uso de probióticos en la prevención y el tratamiento de las enfermedades periodontales. En la mayoría de los estudios clínicos incluidos en esta revisión de la literatura, los probióticos mostraron resultados favorables cuando se utilizaron en la prevención y como coadyuvante del tratamiento de la gingivitis y periodontitis, aportando una mejora en el índice de placa, índice gingival y reducción de la profundidad de sondaje, además a la reducción de microorganismos periodontopatógenos y alteración de la respuesta inmune. Los probióticos mostraron resultados favorables en la mayoría de los estudios clínicos incluidos en esta revisión de la literatura, cuando se utilizan en prevención y como complemento. Aún se necesitan más estudios para establecer protocolos más claros con respecto a las cepas más indicadas, forma de administración y tiempo de uso.A literatura tem demonstrado que os probióticos podem ser um possível aliado na prevenção e tratamento das doenças periodontais. O presente estudo tem como objetivo revisar a literatura quanto ao uso dos probióticos na prevenção e tratamento das doenças periodontais. Na maioria dos estudos clínicos incluídos nessa revisão de literatura, os probióticos apresentaram resultados favoráveis quando usados na prevenção e como auxiliares ao tratamento da gengivite e periodontite, trazendo melhora no índice de placa, índice gengival e redução na profundidade de sondagem, além da redução de microrganismos periodontopatogênicos e alteração da resposta imunológica. Os probióticos apresentaram resultados favoráveis na maioria dos estudos clínicos incluídos nessa revisão de literatura, quando usados na prevenção e como coadjuvante.
