Resumo: The objective was to analyze the perception of nurses about the importance of hand hygiene for the prevention and control of infections in the Intensive Care Unit. This is a descriptive, exploratory, qualitative study. Six nurses working in the intensive care unit of a hospital and maternity hospital located in the Center-South region of Ceará participated in the study. Data collection took place from March to April 2022, using a semi-structured interview script as an instrument. Data were treated through Content Analysis. Through the analytical process, two thematic categories emerged: The Importance of Hand Hygiene for the Prevention of Infections Related to Health Care in the Intensive Care Unit and Safe Care: the frequency with which Hand Hygiene is performed within the Intensive Care Unit. It was evidenced that the practice of hand hygiene, under the perception of nurses, constitutes a strategy of paramount importance for the control and prevention of Infections Related to Health Care, as well as for self-protection within the scope of Intensive Care Units. Therefore, the usual practice of hand hygiene during the care provided to hospitalized patients contributes to the creation of a culture of patient safety and of the nursing professional who mediates care in that sector.

Se trata de un estudio descriptivo, exploratorio, cualitativo. Participaron del estudio seis enfermeros que actúan en la unidad de cuidados intensivos de un hospital y maternidad ubicados en la región Centro-Sur de Ceará. La recolección de datos ocurrió de marzo a abril de 2022, utilizando como instrumento un guión de entrevista semiestructurada. Los datos fueron tratados a través del Análisis de Contenido. A través del proceso analítico, surgieron dos categorías temáticas: La Importancia de la Higiene de Manos para la Prevención de Infecciones Relacionadas con la Atención a la Salud en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos y Cuidado Seguro: la frecuencia con la que se realiza la Higiene de Manos dentro de la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos. Se evidenció que la práctica de la higiene de manos, bajo la percepción de los enfermeros, constituye una estrategia de suma importancia para el control y prevención de las Infecciones Relacionadas con la Atención a la Salud, así como para la autoprotección en el ámbito de las Unidades de Cuidados Intensivos. Por lo tanto, la práctica habitual de la higiene de manos durante la atención a los pacientes hospitalizados contribuye a la creación de una cultura de seguridad del paciente y del profesional de enfermería que media el cuidado en ese sector.Objetivou-se, analisar a percepção dos enfermeiros acerca da importância da higienização das mãos para prevenção e controle de infecções em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva. Trata-se de um estudo descritivo, exploratório qualitativo. Participaram do estudo seis enfermeiros atuantes na unidade terapia intensiva de um hospital e maternidade localizado na Região Centro-Sul Cearense. A coleta de dados ocorreu de março a abril de 2022, utilizando como instrumento um roteiro de entrevista semiestruturada. Os dados foram tratados por meio da Análise de Conteúdo. Mediante o processo analítico emergiram duas categorias temáticas: A Importância da higienização das mãos para prevenção das Infecções Relacionadas à Assistência à Saúde na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva e Cuidado seguro: a frequência que se realiza a Higienização das Mãos no âmbito da Unidade de Terapia Intensiva. Evidenciou-se que a prática da higienização das mãos sob a percepção dos profissionais enfermeiros, constitui uma estratégia de suma importância para o controle e prevenção das Infecções Relacionadas à Assistência à Saúde, assim como também para autoproteção no âmbito das Unidades de Terapia Intensiva.
