The widespread use of face masks during COVID-19 pandemics: a literature review

Resumo: With the COVID-19 pandemic, preventive measures of contagion were included, bringing about several radical changes in the daily lives of the population. This study aimed to present what is known about the widespread use of face masks during the pandemic as a preventive method for COVID-19. A review of the scientific literature was carried out, discussing controversies about the use of facial masks, seeking to elucidate about its efficiency and why it should continue to be used. It is evident that at the beginning of the pandemic, the population had an increased sense of fear, which resulted in greater collaboration with preventive measures, such as the use of masks, hand hygiene, social distance, among others; the collaboration and popular belief with these measures was shown to be related to that disseminated by government officials and other entities of popular impact, such as the media. It is believed that the use of facial masks is capable of reducing the transmission of COVID-19, even though it is not a totally effective method, since it depends directly on the high popular adhesion, on the confection material and on the practice of other preventive attitudes for achieve its greatest effectiveness.

Este estudio tuvo como objetivo presentar lo que se sabe sobre el uso generalizado de máscaras faciales durante la pandemia como método preventivo de COVID-19. Se realizó una revisión de la literatura científica, discutiendo controversias sobre el uso de mascarillas faciales, buscando dilucidar sobre su eficacia y por qué debe seguir utilizándose. Es evidente que, al inicio de la pandemia, la población tenía una mayor sensación de miedo, lo que resultó en una mayor colaboración con medidas preventivas, como el uso de mascarillas, higiene de manos, distanciamiento social, entre otras; La colaboración y creencia popular con estas medidas se mostró relacionada con la difundida por funcionarios gubernamentales y otras entidades de impacto popular, como los medios de comunicación. Se cree que el uso de mascarillas faciales es capaz de reducir la transmisión del COVID-19, aunque no es un método totalmente efectivo, ya que depende directamente de la alta adherencia popular, del material de confección y de la práctica de otras actitudes preventivas para lograr su mayor eficacia.Com a pandemia da COVID-19, houve a inclusão de medidas preventivas de contágio, trazendo várias mudanças radicais no cotidiano da população. Este trabalho teve como objetivo apresentar o que se sabe quanto ao uso generalizado de máscaras faciais durante a pandemia como um método preventivo à COVID-19. Uma revisão da literatura científica foi realizada, trazendo em discussão controvérsias sobre o uso de máscaras faciais, buscando elucidar a respeito de sua eficiência e do porquê de continuar o seu uso. É evidente que ao início da pandemia a população estava com uma sensação de medo aumentada, o que resultou numa maior colaboração com as medidas preventivas, como o uso de máscaras, higienização das mãos, distanciamento social, entre outras; a colaboração e crença popular com essas medidas mostrou-se relacionada com o divulgado pelos governantes e por demais entidades de impacto popular, como a mídia.
