Fiber-rich powders of tropical fruits by-products: a bibliographic review on their bioactive compounds

Resumo: Brazil is a country of great agricultural activity, resulting in high production of agro-industrial waste. In most cases, these residues not have industrial applications and can become a source of environmental pollution. This study aims to review the bioactive compounds present in tropical fruit residues and to verify their potential for use in the production of Fiber-Rich Powders (PRF). Qualitative bibliographic review was used as methodology. The compounds with effective beneficial health effects reviewed were phenolic compounds, carotenoids, vitamins (C, E and A) and alkaloids (trigonelline and caffeine). The data found for the PRF indicate good functional properties and high content of antioxidant compounds and dietary fibers. Thus, these materials to be used in the development of new products. In addition, we found that there are few studies about the bioaccessibility of powders produced from tropical fruit residues, which confirms the need for further studies on this topic. We emphasize that in addition to health benefits, the production of fiber-rich powders is an important alternative to reduce impacts on the environment due to the incorrect disposal of agro-industrial waste.

Estos residuos, en la mayoría de los casos, no tienen aplicación industrial y pueden convertirse en una fuente de contaminación ambiental. Este estudio tiene como objetivo revisar los compuestos bioactivos presentes en los residuos de frutas tropicales y verificar su potencial de uso en la producción de polvos ricos en fibra (PRF). Se utilizó una revisión cualitativa de la literatura como metodología. Los compuestos con efectos beneficiosos para la salud efectivos revisados fueron compuestos fenólicos, carotenoides, vitaminas (C, E y A) y alcaloides (trigonelina y cafeína). Los datos encontrados para el PRF indican buenas propiedades funcionales y alto contenido de compuestos antioxidantes y fibras dietéticas, lo que permite que estos materiales se utilicen en el desarrollo de nuevos productos. Además, encontramos que hay pocos estudios que aborden la bioaccesibilidad de los polvos producidos a partir de residuos de frutas tropicales, lo que confirma la necesidad de realizar más estudios sobre este tema. Hacemos hincapié en que, además de los beneficios para la salud, la producción de polvos ricos en fibra es una alternativa importante para reducir los impactos en el medio ambiente debido a la eliminación incorrecta de los residuos agroindustriales.O Brasil é um país de grande atividade agrícola, resultando em elevada produção de resíduos agroindustriais. Estes resíduos, na maioria das vezes, não apresentam aplicação industrial, podendo transformar-se em fonte de poluição ambiental. Esse estudo tem como objetivo revisar os compostos bioativos presentes em resíduos de frutos tropicais e verificar seu potencial para aproveitamento na produção de Pós Ricos em Fibras (PRF). Utilizou-se como metodologia uma revisão bibliográfica qualitativa. Os compostos com efetivos efeitos benéficos à saúde revisados foram os compostos fenólicos, carotenóides, vitaminas (C, E e A) e alcalóides (trigonelina e cafeína). Os dados encontrados para os PRF apontam boas propriedades funcionais e alto teor de compostos antioxidantes e fibras dietéticas, permitindo que esses materiais sejam usados na elaboração de novos produtos. Além disso, verificamos que poucos são os estudos que abordam a bioacessibilidade de pós produzidos a partir de resíduos de frutos tropicais, o que confirma a necessidade de mais estudos com essa temática.
