COVID-19 in Northeast Brazil: preliminary characteristics of deaths

Resumo: Objective: to describe the characteristics of deaths in the Northeast region of Brazil. Methods: a descriptive study based on epidemiological bulletins released by the health departments of each state in the Northeast on the cases of COVID-19, until July 20, 2020, the mortality rate was calculated, a set of deaths aged over 60 years , sex and presence or not of comorbidity, in addition to an individual analysis by state of the most common associated diseases. Results: Ceará was the state with the most cases and deaths, and Piauí the least number of cases and deaths, the region's mortality rate is 3.6%. Most deaths in the region were composed of men with more 60 years old, with some associated comorbidity, mainly cardiovascular diseases, followed by diabetes mellitus. Conclusion: the features show similarities in comparison with the seen preliminary results in other locations around the world.

Métodos: un estudio descriptivo basado en boletines epidemiológicos publicados por los departamentos de salud de cada estado en el noreste sobre los casos de COVID-19, hasta el 20 de julio de 2020, se calculó la tasa de mortalidad, un conjunto de muertes mayores de 60 años , sexo y presencia o no de comorbilidad, además de un análisis individual por estado de las enfermedades asociadas más comunes. Resultados: Ceará fue el estado con la mayor cantidad de casos y muertes, y Piauí con la menor cantidad de casos y muertes, la tasa de mortalidad de la región es del 3.6%. La mayoría de las muertes en la región fueron hombres con más 60 años, con alguna comorbilidad asociada, principalmente enfermedades cardiovasculares, seguida de diabetes mellitus. Conclusión: las características muestran similitudes en comparación con los resultados preliminares vistos en otros lugares del mundo.Objetivo: descrever as características dos óbitos na região Nordeste do Brasil. Métodos: estudo descritivo com base em boletins epidemiológicos divulgados pelas secretarias de saúde de cada estado do Nordeste sobre os casos de COVID-19, até 20 de julho de 2020, foi calculado a taxa de letalidade, conjunto de óbitos com idade acima de 60 anos, o sexo e presença ou não de comorbidade, além de uma análise individual por estado das doenças associadas mais comum. Resultados: A Ceará foi o estado com mais casos e óbitos, e o Piauí o estado menor número de casos e óbitos, a taxa de letalidade da região é de 3,6% Em sua maioria os óbitos na região foi composto por homens com mais de 60 anos, com alguma comorbidade associada, principalmente doenças cardiovasculares, seguido a diabetes mellitus.
