The practice of composting as a transformative environmental education agent at Instituto Federal de Minas Gerais - Ibirité campus

Resumo:  Environmental education based on collective practices can result in a relevant process of educating conscious citizens. Proper waste management brings opportunities to involve the many social actors responsible for the generation and, consequently, for waste disposal. Considering organic waste, composting consists of an alternative for recycling that grants the waste's economic value. This work aimed to analyze the effects of the practice of composting organic waste generated at the Instituto Federal de Minas Gerais Campus Ibirité in the process of environmental awareness and in promoting critical environmental education for students. Thereby, taking as a reference to the theoretical premises of Critical Environmental Education, the practice of composting and subsequent assessment of the activity's capacity to generate environmental awareness was carried out. For this, semi-structured interviews were conducted with four students: two directly involved in the activity, and the other two that had already contributed but were no longer engaged in it. The results show that the sense of socio-environmental responsibility has been internalized in the students. They have also expressed the importance of sharing with other people the knowledge obtained through the activity. The way students related to waste has also been transformed, as they recognized its added value and the importance of recycling and composting. Thus, it has been concluded that the practice was shown valuable and efficient in promoting transformative learning experiences for students.

La gestión de residuos, cuando realizada de forma adecuada, conlleva algunas oportunidades para involucrar a los diferentes actores responsables por la generación y, en consecuencia, el destino de estos residuos. Cuando hablamos de desechos orgánicos, el compostaje es una alternativa para el reciclaje teniendo en cuenta el valor agregado de los residuos. Este trabajo tuvo como objetivo analizar los efectos de la práctica de compostaje de residuos orgánicos generados en el Instituto Federal de Minas Gerais Campus Ibirité en el proceso de conciencia ambiental y en la promoción de la educación ambiental crítica para los estudiantes. Metodológicamente, basándose en las premisas teóricas de la Educación Ambiental Crítica, se llevó a cabo la práctica del compostaje y, luego, la evaluación de la capacidad de la actividad para generar conciencia ambiental. Para esto, se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas con estudiantes de un curso de secundaria integrado en dos niveles de participación: estudiantes directamente involucrados en la actividad y estudiantes que ya estuvieron involucrados, pero que, en el momento de la investigación, ya no estaban involucrados. Los resultados muestran que hubo una internalización del sentido de responsabilidad socioambiental. Todos los estudiantes expresaron la importancia de llevar los conceptos que aprendieron a otros sitios, trascendiendo los límites de la escuela. Hubo, también, una transformación en la relación entre los estudiantes y los desechos, quienes identificaron claramente el valor agregado inherente al residuo y la importancia del reciclaje del compostaje. Por lo tanto, se concluye que la práctica se demostró beneficiosa y eficiente con respecto a la educación ambiental transformadora de los estudiantes involucrados. A educação ambiental a partir de práticas coletivas pode resultar em importantes processos de formação de cidadãos conscientes. A gestão de resíduos realizada de forma adequada traz consigo algumas oportunidades de envolvimento dos diversos atores responsáveis pela geração e, consequentemente, pela destinação desses resíduos. Em se tratando de resíduos orgânicos, a compostagem é uma alternativa para a reciclagem que leva em conta seu valor agregado. Este trabalho objetivou analisar os efeitos da prática da compostagem de resíduos orgânicos gerados no Instituto Federal de Minas Gerais, Campus Ibirité, no processo de conscientização ambiental e na promoção da educação ambiental crítica dos estudantes.  Metodologicamente, tomando como referência as premissas teóricas da Educação Ambiental Crítica, realizou-se a prática da compostagem e posterior avaliação da capacidade desta atividade em gerar conscientização ambiental. Para isso, foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas com estudantes de curso integrado ao ensino médio em dois níveis de envolvimento: alunos diretamente envolvidos com a atividade e alunos que já estiveram envolvidos, mas que, no momento da pesquisa, não mais estivessem. Os resultados mostram que houve uma internalização do senso de responsabilidade socioambiental. Todos os estudantes manifestaram perceber a importância de levar os conceitos aprendidos para outros ambientes, transcendendo os limites da escola. Houve também a transformação da relação dos alunos com os resíduos que identificaram claramente o valor agregado inerente e a importância da reciclagem a partir da compostagem.
