Correlation between neurological screening and brainstem electrophysiological activity in children with microcephaly: A series of case

Resumo: | There are some articles that concern of hearing of children with microcephaly carried by Zika Virus, but it was no notice of the manifestations and integration of auditory and linguistic skills. Purpose: To analyze and compare the results of the Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA) with the application´s results of the Early Language Milestone Scale (ELM) in children with microcephaly by congenital infection by the Zika Virus. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional, retrospective study and the study of case carried out from the analysis of nine medical charts of children attended at speech therapy. It was included the charts with complete information of head circumference at birth, BERA and ELM evaluation. Results: The BERA analysis pointed the absence of retrocochlear alterations despite of the integrity of the auditory pathways, the language skills that support the linguistic development were compromised according to the ELM results. Conclusion: The abnormal linguistic development of children with microcephaly by Zika virus was not associated with auditory development and maturation, which may indicate a possible lesion of superior cortical structures of the brainstem, which was not evaluated by the BERA. |

Objetivo: Analizar y comparar los hallazgos del potenciales evocados auditivos de tronco cerebral (PEATC), con los resultados de la aplicación de la Escala de Early Language Milestone (ELM) en niños afectados por microcefalia secundaria a infección congénita por el Virus Zika. Metodología: Se trata de un estudio transversal, retrospectivo y del tipo de estudio de caso realizado a partir del análisis de nueve historias clínicas de niños que se encontraban en logopedia. Se incluyeron historias clínicas completas que contenían información sobre el perímetro cefálico al nacer, PEATC y ELM. Resultados: El análisis PEATC descartó la presencia de alteraciones retrococleares, sin embargo, a pesar de la integridad de las vías auditivas encontradas, las habilidades del lenguaje importantes para el desarrollo lingüístico estaban comprometidas, según los resultados de la ELM. Conclusión: El desarrollo lingüístico alterado de los niños afectados de microcefalia por virus Zika no se asoció con el desarrollo y la maduración auditiva, lo que puede indicar un posible deterioro de las estructuras corticales superiores al tronco encefálico, no evaluado por PEATC.Apesar da existência de pesquisas que abordem a audição de crianças com microcefalia decorrente do Zika Vírus, muito pouco se sabe sobre as manifestações e integração das habilidades auditivas e linguísticas. Objetivo: Analisar e comparar os achados do Potencial Evocado Auditivo de Tronco Encefálico (PEATE), com os resultados da aplicação da Early Language Milestone Scale (ELM) em crianças acometidas pela microcefalia decorrente da infecção congênita pelo Zika Vírus. Metodologia: Trata-se de um estudo transversal, retrospectivo e do tipo de estudo de caso realizado a partir da análise de nove prontuários de crianças que estavam atendimento fonoaudiológico. Foram incluídos os prontuários que continham informações sobre o perímetro cefálico ao nascimento, resultados do PEATE e do ELM. Resultados: A análise do PEATE descartou a presença de alterações retrococleares, porém, apesar da integridade das vias auditivas encontrada, as habilidades linguísticas importantes para o desenvolvimento linguístico estiveram comprometidas, conforme os resultados do ELM.
