Resumo: Age estimation is a fundamental process in Forensic Science. Different methods of dental age assessment have been developed to estimate the chronological age of living and dead humans, including the use of 3D images obtained from Cone-beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). The aim of this study was to analyze, through a literature review, the use of CBCT for age estimation. For this purpose, complete scientific articles published in national and international journals were used. CBCT proved to be effective during age estimation, in dental and bone analyses. However, the chronological age, the level of dental development, as well as the different groups of teeth seem to influence the analyses, determining a higher or lower level of reliability in the presumption of age. CBCT exams are an excellent alternative for analyzing both dental and bone tissues, contributing significantly to age estimation.

Diferentes métodos de evaluación de la edad dental fueron desenvueltos para estimar la edad cronológica de individuos vivos y muertos, incluido el uso de imágenes 3D adquiridas por exámenes de tomografía computarizada de haz cónico (TCHC). El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar, a través de una revisión de literatura, el uso de TCHC en la estimación de la edad. Para ello, fueron utilizados artículos científicos completos publicados en revistas nacionales e internacionales. TCHC demostró ser eficaz durante la estimación de la edad, en el análisis de dientes y huesos. Sin embargo, la edad cronológica, el nivel de desarrollo dental, así como los diferentes grupos de dientes parecen influir en los análisis, determinando un mayor o menor nivel de confiabilidad en la suposición de la edad. Los exámenes TCHC son una excelente alternativa para analizar el tejido dental y óseo, contribuyendo significativamente para la estimación de la edad.A estimativa de idade é um processo fundamental em Ciências Forenses. Diferentes métodos de avaliação da idade dentária foram desenvolvidos para estimar a idade cronológica de indivíduos vivos e mortos, incluindo o emprego de imagens 3D obtidas a partir de exames de tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico (TCFC). O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar por meio de uma revisão de literatura, o emprego da TCFC na estimativa de idade. Para tanto, foram utilizados artigos científicos completos publicados em revistas nacionais e internacionais. A TCFC mostrou-se efetiva durante a estimativa de idade, em análises de dentes e ossos. No entanto, a idade cronológica, o nível de desenvolvimento dentário, bem como os diferentes grupos de dentes parecem influenciar as análises, determinado maior ou menor nível de confiabilidade na presunção da idade.
