Effects of chess on cognitive functions and learning of schoolchildren: a systematic review

Resumo: This study aimed to systematically review in the literature how the chess game influences cognition and the learning process in the school population. Method: Were consulted the PubMed, Scopus, SciELO and Lilacs digital databases, whose eligibility criteria selected randomized controlled trials and that the sample covered schoolchildren between 6:0 and 17:11 years, without cognitive, intellectual and/or learning impairment. The researches, selection and analysis of articles were carried out by two independent evaluators. Results: Five studies that relate chess set with cognitive performance and learning were found. The studies were showed that chess game benefits the cognition and learning of schoolchildren, but they differ as to the significance of this benefit.  Conclusions: There was a need for more studies on the theme and of high methodological quality, mainly related to students with learning difficulties.

Metodología: Las búsquedas se realizaron en las bases de datos digitales PubMed, Scopus, SciELO y Lilacs, cuyos criterios de elegibilidad seleccionaron estudios controlados aleatorios y la muestra incluyó escolares entre 6: 0 y 17:11 años, sin cognitivo, intelectual y/o aprendizaje Las búsquedas, la selección y el análisis de los artículos fueron realizados por dos evaluadores independientes. Resultados: Se encontraron cinco estudios que relacionan el juego de ajedrez con el rendimiento cognitivo y el aprendizaje. Sugieren que el juego del ajedrez beneficia la cognición y el aprendizaje de los escolares, pero difiere en cuanto a la importancia de este beneficio. Conclusión: Hubo necesidad de más estudios sobre el tema y de alta calidad metodológica, principalmente relacionados con estudiantes con dificultades de aprendizaje.Objetivo: Este estudo teve como objetivo revisar sistematicamente na literatura como o jogo de xadrez influencia as funções cognitivas e, consequentemente, o processo de aprendizagem na população escolar. Metodologia: Foram realizadas buscas nas bases de dados digitais PubMed, Scopus, SciELO e Lilacs, cujos critérios de elegibilidade selecionou estudos randomizados controlados e que a amostra abrangesse escolares entre 6:0 e 17:11 anos, sem comprometimento cognitivo, intelectual e/ou de aprendizagem. As buscas, seleção e análise dos artigos foram realizadas por dois avaliadores independentes. Resultados:  Foram encontrados cinco estudos que relacionam jogo de xadrez com desempenho cognitivo e aprendizagem. Eles sugerem que o jogo de xadrez beneficia a cognição e a aprendizagem de escolares, mas divergiram quanto a significância deste benefício.
