Prevalence of functional disability and associated factors in brazilian elderly

Resumo: The present study aimed to estimate the prevalence of functional disability (FD) in instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) and associated factors in elderly Brazilians. This is a cross-sectional study, with a sample of elderly people of both sexes, from the National Health Survey (NHS), 2013. Descriptive statistics and the chi-square test were used, considering statistically significant associations for p < 0,05, and using the SPSS program (version 22). It was observed that the prevalence of FD in IADLs was 17.3%. The factors associated with FD were: age (p<0.001), sex (p<0.001), education (p<0.001), marital status (p<0.001), income (p<0.001), health perception (p<0.001), presence of disease (p<0.001), occurrence of falls in the last 12 months (p<0.001), TV time (p<0.001) and level of physical activity (p<0.001). It is concluded that the prevalence of FD in IADLs in the older adults was not high, and its associated factors were sociodemographic, health and behavioral variables.

Se trata de un estudio transversal, con una muestra de ancianos de ambos os sexos, de la Encuesta Nacional de Salud (ENS), 2013. Se utilizó estadística descriptiva y la prueba de chi-cuadrado, considerándose asociaciones estadísticamente significativas para p < 0,05, y utilizando el programa SPSS (versión 22). Se observó que la prevalencia de FD en las AIVD fue del 17,3%. Los factores asociados a la IF fueron: edad (p<0,001), sexo (p<0,001), escolaridad (p<0,001), estado civil (p<0,001), renta (p<0,001), percepción de salud (p<0,001), presencia de enfermedad (p<0,001), ocurrencia de caídas en los últimos 12 meses (p<0,001), tiempo de TV (p<0,001) y nivel de actividad física (p<0,001). Se concluye que la prevalencia de DF en AIVD en adultos mayores no fue alta, y sus factores asociados fueron variables sociodemográficas, de salud y conductuales.O presente estudo teve como objetivo foi estimar a prevalência de incapacidade funcional (IF) em atividades instrumentais de vida diária (AIVDs) e dos fatores associados em idosos brasileiros. Trata-se de um estudo transversal, com amostra de idosos, de ambos os sexos, da Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde (PNS), 2013. Foi utilizada estatística descritiva e o teste de qui-quadrado, considerando associações estatisticamente significantes para o p <0,05, e com a utilização do programa SPSS (versão 22). Observou-se que a prevalência de IF em AIVDs foi de 17,3%. Os fatores associados a IF foram: idade (p<0,001), sexo (p<0,001), escolaridade (p<0,001), situação conjugal (p<0,001), renda (p<0,001), percepção de saúde (p<0,001), presença de doença (p<0,001), ocorrência de queda nos últimos 12 meses (p<0,001), tempo de TV (p<0,001) e nível de atividade física (p<0,001).
