Physical fitness level, body image and school performance in elementary school students

Resumo: This study aimed to verify the level of physical fitness, body image and school performance in students of the initial grades of elementary school. The sample consisted of 285 students selected voluntarily in five municipal schools in the city of Guarapuava/Paraná/Brasil. All participants were students in the fourth and fifth years of elementary school and were aged between eight and eleven years. The instrument used for the verification of physical fitness was the battery of tests "Projeto Esporte Brasil (PROESP-Br)" and for the assessment of body image perception the scale of silhouettes proposed by Kakeshita et al., (2009). School performance was obtained by the average grade of the disciplines that make up the students' curriculum and later divided into concepts. After the analysis, the results showed that the majority of students, regardless of age and sex, had low levels of physical fitness, both related to health and associated with motor performance. When exploring the impact of physical fitness on school performance, no direct relationship was observed. The same was noticed when the association between body image and school performance was carried out, in which there were no associations, although students with lower grades were more dissatisfied in relation to thinness.

La muestra consistió en 285 estudiantes seleccionados voluntariamente en cinco escuelas municipales de la ciudad de Guarapuava/Paraná/Brasil. Todos los participantes eran estudiantes en el cuarto y quinto año de la escuela primaria y tenían entre 8 y 11 años. El instrumento utilizado para la verificación de la aptitud física fue la batería de pruebas “Projeto Esporte Brasil” (PROESP-Br) y para la evaluación de la percepción de la imagen corporal la escala de silueta propuesta por Kakeshita et al., (2009). El rendimiento escolar se obtuvo por el promedio de las asignaturas escolares que conforman las matrices curriculares de los estudiantes y luego se dividió en conceptos. Después del análisis, los resultados mostraron que la mayoría de los estudiantes, independientemente de su edad y sexo, tenían bajos niveles de condición física, tanto relacionados con la salud como asociados con el rendimiento motor. Al explorar el impacto de la aptitud física en el rendimiento escolar, no se observó relación directa. Lo mismo se notó cuando se llevó a cabo la asociación entre la imagen corporal y el rendimiento escolar, en el que no se verificaron asociaciones, aunque los estudiantes con calificaciones más bajas estaban más insatisfechos debido a la delgadez.Este estudo teve como objetivo verificar o nível de aptidão física, imagem corporal e desempenho escolar em estudantes das séries iniciais do ensino fundamental. A amostra foi composta por 285 escolares selecionados por voluntariedade em cinco escolas municipais da cidade de Guarapuava/PR. Todos os participantes eram alunos dos quartos e quintos anos do ensino fundamental e possuíam idades entre oito e 11 anos. O instrumento utilizado para a verificação da aptidão física foi a bateria de testes Projeto Esporte Brasil (PROESP-Br) e para a avaliação da percepção da imagem corporal a escala de silhuetas proposta por Kakeshita et al., (2009). O desempenho escolar foi obtido pela média das notas das disciplinas que compõem a grade curricular dos escolares e posteriormente divididas em conceitos. Após as análises, os resultados evidenciaram que a maioria dos escolares, independentemente da idade e do sexo, apresentaram baixos níveis de aptidão física, tanto relacionada à saúde quanto associada ao desempenho motor. Ao explorar o impacto da aptidão física sobre o desempenho escolar não se observou relações diretas.
