Resumo: The rapid aging of the Brazilian elderly population has caused transformations with complex problems in the area of public health and challenges for health professionals in the promotion, prevention, and treatment of chronic degenerative diseases. Objective: analyze the health indicators of the elderly in the states of northeastern Brazil. Methodology: a descriptive-analytical transversal study with data collected by the Health Information System and Monitoring of Elderly Policies (SISAP-elderly) in the nine northeastern states and complemented by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), between 2015 to 2019. Demographic, socioeconomic, mortality, morbidity, and health services indicators were used. Data were processed using the statistical program Excel 2010 and Stata version 15 and the association between indicators were made using Pearson's correlation. Results: Alagoas had the highest proportion of deaths and Maranhão had the highest morbidity from preventable causes, the highest proportion of deaths from hypertension, and the lowest number of physicians/inhabitants. Hypertension was the most controllable disease in primary care, with a strong correlation as a cause of hospitalization and avoidable mortality. With this, it is expected to contribute to the strengthening of primary care in the Northeast, especially in the weakest states, emphasizing easily controllable diseases such as hypertension, however, with a strong impact on health indicators in the region.

Research, Society and Development2022-01-24info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/article/view/2554810.33448/rsd-v11i2.25548Research, Society and Development; Vol. 11 No. 2; e24411225548Research, Society and Development; Vol. 11 Núm. 2; e24411225548Research, Society and Development; v. 11 n. 2; e244112255482525-3409reponame:Research, Society and Developmentinstname:Universidade Federal de Itajubá (UNIFEI)instacron:UNIFEIporhttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/article/view/25548/22507Copyright (c) 2022 Elisangela Porto; Sueli de Souza Costa; Edivânia Porto; Yara Maria Cavalcantehttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessPorto, ElisangelaCosta, Sueli de Souza Porto, EdivâniaCavalcante, Yara Maria 2022-02-07T01:42:50Zoai:ojs.pkp.sfu.ca:article/25548Revistahttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/indexPUBhttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/oairsd.articles@gmail.com2525-34092525-3409opendoar:2024-01-17T09:43:48.413620Research, Society and Development - Universidade Federal de Itajubá (UNIFEI)false
