Resumo: The aim of this article is to understand the political struggles in Bananal,an important coffee county in Paraiba Valley in Brazil, between the years1878-1888. In addition, I try to understand the connections between thetown’s elite and wider processes of consolidation, transformation and thecrisis of the Imperial State of Brazil. In other words, I analyze the politicalreality of the Brazilian Empire and political struggles that derive from anunstable situation caused mainly by the abolitionists that lead to the fallof the Brazilian Monarchy.
